Malayalam cinema’s most anticipated reunion of the decade is suddenly surrounded by uncertainty. *Patriot* — the mega spy thriller bringing Mammootty and Mohanlal together on screen after nearly a decade — has just dropped its first song announcement in a way that is raising serious red flags about its April 23, 2026 release date.

## The Song Post That Started the Speculation

Composer Sushin Shyam announced the first single *Kaattu Thottapol* with the caption: “Patriot — Coming soon to cinemas near you” — conspicuously avoiding any mention of the initially announced release date of April 23, 2026. [Pearl Abyss](https://crimsondesert.pearlabyss.com/en-US/Main/Index)

In the world of film promotions, that omission is anything but accidental. When a movie is confidently heading toward its release date, promotional material always flaunts it.

## Why Is Patriot in Trouble?

The root cause is a bitter standoff between the producers and Kerala’s exhibitors’ body. Producer Anto Joseph’s agreement demanded a 60:40 revenue split in favour of producers for both the first and second weeks — whereas the existing industry formula allocates 60% in week one, 55:45 in week two, and 50:50 in week three. Due to this issue, FEUOK (Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala) instructed theatre owners not to sign the release agreement with the Patriot makers. Without Kerala’s screens, releasing on April 23 becomes nearly impossible.

## Has It Been Officially Postponed?

Not yet — but the signs are unmistakable. As of March 8, 2026, the makers have not issued any official confirmation regarding postponement — Women’s Day character posters still carried the April 23 date, suggesting they are sticking to plan for now even as the industry watches closely. ## Why This Film Matters So Much

Directed by Mahesh Narayanan — acclaimed for *Take Off* and *Malik* — *Patriot* also reunites Nayanthara with Mammootty after their 2016 film *Puthiya Niyamam*. [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3321460/Crimson_Desert/) The film is a Malayalam political spy thriller blending realism with gripping storytelling — making it one of the most high-stakes Malayalam productions in years. ## FAQs

### **Q: Is Patriot officially postponed from April 23, 2026?**

No official postponement has been announced yet — however, the first song announcement deliberately avoided mentioning the April 23 date, fuelling strong speculation that a delay is imminent due to the ongoing exhibitor dispute. [Pearl Abyss](https://crimsondesert.pearlabyss.com/en-US/Main/Index)

### **Q: Why are Kerala theatres refusing to screen Patriot?**

Kerala’s Film Exhibitors United Organisation (FEUOK) blacklisted *Patriot* because the producer demanded a 60:40 revenue split for both the first two weeks — violating the existing industry norm of 60:40 in week one followed by 55:45 in week two.
