Iran bounced back from their 6-2 thrashing against England in the best way possible – a 2-0 win against Wales. After drawing on matchday one against the USA, Wales have been pushed to the bottom of the table.
It seemed almost certain that the game would end 0-0 up until the 85th minute. But, a red card for Wayne Hennessey changed the composure of the game with nine minutes of additional time added on.
Iran defeat Wales with two late goals
The European side defended with Leicester City’s Danny Ward between the sticks, and a man light. However, he wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet for his side.
Wales were going direct and looking for a break at every opportunity. But, Iran tried to take advantage of their extra man throughout additional time. And eventually, they got the breakthrough via Roozbeh Cheshmi in the eighth minute of additional time. He hit the ball hard into the bottom corner from the outside of the box to beat Ward.
And shortly after, Iran had doubled their lead with Ramin Rezaeian chopping the ball over the keeper after a counter attack. Following the shock result, Wales will need to find a way to win their game against England to qualify for the knockout stages. On the other hand, Iran could go through with a result against the USA.
