Mumbai Indians (MI) will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in match No. 33 of the Indian Premier League 2025 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, April 17.

Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: Preview

After the explosive run-fests witnessed last season, a team breaching the 300-run mark in the IPL felt inevitable. Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) were tipped to be the first to do it—and they nearly pulled it off in their very first game, racking up a mammoth 286 for 6. That performance even prompted their former bowling coach, Dale Steyn, to make a bold claim: “Small prediction. April 17 we’ll see the first 300 in IPL. Who knows, I might even be there to see it happen.”

Now, April 17 is here. And fittingly, SRH are up against Mumbai Indians (MI)—the very side they launched their fearless brand of cricket against last season, a style that carried them all the way to the IPL 2024 final. In that clash, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, batting at No. 3, smashed blazing sixties to lay the foundation for what was then the highest-ever total in the league.

Both MI and SRH currently sit on four points from six games, with net run rate being the only separator. This fixture also kicks off a pivotal stretch for them as well as Chennai Super Kings (currently tenth). Over the next six days, MI and SRH will meet twice, and both also face CSK—making this upcoming 10-day window potentially season-defining for three of the league’s most storied franchises.

A more compelling narrative ahead of Thursday night’s encounter between Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad is the burning question of the season: will the IPL finally see a team cross the 300-run mark? The conditions seem ripe, and the firepower is there. But as Naman Dhir, MI’s own power-hitter, wisely put it, “It’s cricket. I will not stick my neck out. You must have noticed last night. Even 100 (111) could be defended.” So, while a 300 is certainly within reach, the game’s unpredictability continues to be its biggest thrill.

Mumbai Indians have quietly built a formidable bowling unit this season. They’ve claimed the most wickets in IPL 2025—47 in total—even after playing one match fewer than three other teams. Their bowlers also boast the best strike rate and second-best average in the league.

Karn Sharma made a statement in his first outing of the season, picking up 3 for 36—an effort that earned him just his second Player of the Match award in the IPL, the previous one also coming in MI colours way back in 2017.

Trent Boult could be a key figure again, especially against SRH’s left-handed heavy top order—Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Ishan Kishan. Boult holds a favourable record against two of the three, having kept them to below a run a ball in T20s, making the new-ball battle all the more intriguing.

Mumbai Indians’ pace unit almost picks itself, but the real question lies in their spin selection ahead of the high-stakes clash with Sunrisers Hyderabad. As for the spin department, MI will have to choose wisely. The Wankhede tends to favour pace, but a quality spinner can still be a game-changer, especially in the middle overs.

MI haven’t exactly been dominant with the bat early on either—their opening stand has averaged just 22.16. If they are to take advantage of SRH’s early frailties, they’ll need a sharper start than what we’ve seen so far.

Match-ups could play a crucial role. Mohammed Shami holds the edge over Rohit Sharma in the IPL, dismissing him thrice for 65 runs in 58 deliveries. He’s also accounted for MI skipper Hardik Pandya three times, although Pandya has countered with an impressive strike rate of 180.

When it comes to containing the dangerous Abhishek Sharma, MI have several potent weapons. Jasprit Bumrah has dominated the matchup—two wickets for just 10 runs in 17 balls. Deepak Chahar has been equally effective, removing Abhishek twice for 19 runs in 12 deliveries. Trent Boult adds to the arsenal, with two wickets for 25 runs in 26 balls against the left-hander.

And speaking of Bumrah, the ace pacer is on the cusp of a milestone—just four wickets away from reaching 300 T20 scalps.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have struggled badly in the powerplay this season, sporting the worst economy rate in IPL 2025.

“One win can catapult you up the table, and then you can get on a roll. There’s trust within the playing group that both teams are quality sides capable of winning on their day,” said Daniel Vettori, head coach of SRH, as he weighed in on the upcoming clash.

Circling back to the Sharma vs Sharma storyline, the spotlight will inevitably fall on the senior of the two—Rohit Sharma. He’s yet to truly hit his stride this season, but with the stakes rising, Thursday could be the night he delivers. On the flip side, Abhishek Sharma remains one of SRH’s key X-factors, especially with the explosive Travis Head at the top. Their duel with Jasprit Bumrah promises to be one of the marquee contests of the match. And there’s history too—Abhishek’s highest international score, a blistering 135 off 54 balls against England, came at this very ground back in February.

And while Abhishek Sharma has been somewhat inconsistent this season, his T20 numbers demand respect. He now has seven centuries in the format—six of them coming since January 2023—putting him behind only Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for most T20 hundreds by an Indian.

Sunrisers Hyderabad, meanwhile, have struggled to make breakthroughs, with the fewest wickets per match, the worst bowling average, and the poorest economy rate.

Ishan Kishan, who spent seven seasons with Mumbai Indians, will now play against them for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Despite scoring 320 runs at a strike rate of 149 last season, MI chose not to retain him before the mega auction. They attempted to bring him back but pulled out at INR 3.2 crore, allowing SRH to secure him for INR 11.25 crore.

Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: Pitch Report and Weather Conditions

Wankhede Stadium has traditionally been known as a chase-friendly venue, but since the start of IPL 2024, teams batting first have won five out of the nine games. The clash will take place on Pitch No. 6, which features fairly equidistant square boundaries.

With a bit of dew, plenty of runs, and an exciting contest ahead, both teams are coming off victories in their previous matches and will be eager to build on that momentum. How Abhishek and Head handle Bumrah could be a crucial factor in the match, as well as whether Rohit Sharma finds his rhythm with the bat.

Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: Team News and Predicted XI

Mumbai Indians – Team News

There are no reports of any injuries to players ahead of the game. In their last match, MI had Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma in the top four. If they continue with this combination, there may be an opportunity to bring in either Bevon Jacobs or Corbin Bosch in place of Will Jacks, who isn’t a natural fit in the lower-middle order. Bosch had a longer bowling session on the eve of the game.

Rohit Sharma has yet to survive the Powerplay in any of his five innings so far. Only de Kock (six times) has been dismissed more frequently than Rohit in this phase. Rohit will be facing Pat Cummins and Mohammed Shami, both of whom have had the upper hand against him in T20s. However, both bowlers have struggled this season, and this could be an excellent chance for Rohit to find his form and set the record straight.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – Team News

There have been no reports of any injuries to players, but Adam Zampa, who was injured, has been replaced by 21-year-old Ravichandran Smaran. Smaran, a left-handed batter from Karnataka, joins the SRH setup at his base price of INR 30 lakh. He has played seven first-class games, amassing over 500 runs at an average of 64.50, including a double century against Punjab. Additionally, he has scored 433 runs in 10 List A games since his 2024 debut, with an average of 72.16 and two centuries. In T20s, he has 170 runs in six matches at a strike rate of 170.

SRH enter this game on the back of chasing down 246 against Punjab Kings. Their batting appears solid, but they may be looking to strengthen their bowling options. On the eve of the match, South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder bowled in the nets to players like Abhinav Manohar and Aniket Verma.

Ishan Kishan’s form has tapered off since his explosive SRH debut, where he scored an unbeaten 106 off 47 balls. In his five innings since then, he has managed only 30 runs. Having spent seven years with MI, Kishan is familiar with both the conditions and opposition, making him a key player to watch. SRH head coach Daniel Vettori acknowledged Kishan’s valuable insights, saying, “Obviously we would be foolish not to tap into some of that knowledge and understanding around the Mumbai mentality. He’s a wealth of knowledge for myself and the rest of the coaches for this time.”

In head-to-head matchups, Harshal Patel has been particularly effective against Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, dismissing both players three times in T20s off 29 and 13 balls, respectively.

Sunrisers Hyderabad – Predicted XI

  1. Travis Head
  2. Abhishek Sharma
  3. Ishan Kishan

Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: Players To Watch Out For

Trent Boult (Mumbai Indians)

Early wickets will be crucial to halting SRH’s explosive batting line-up, and Trent Boult is typically a strong contender for that role. However, this season, he has taken only two wickets in the first six overs, both of which came in matches at the Wankhede.

His strike rate during the powerplay has increased from 19 in IPL 2024 to 36 this year, while his economy rate has also risen from 7 last season to 9.1.

Ishan Kishan (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

Ishan Kishan had an excellent start to his campaign, but his form has declined recently, with three single-digit scores in his last four completed innings. Despite this, SRH remain unconcerned.

Coach Daniel Vettori stated, “I talked about a little bit of luck, and he’s at the hardest in terms of that – getting out caught down the leg side and picking out a few fielders. I still feel like he’s the same batsman who scored that hundred in the first game.”
