IPL 2025: Torrent Group

IPL 2025: The excitement for IPL 2025 has already started building, with reports surfacing about a major ownership shift for the Gujarat Titans. According to a recent report, Ahmedabad based Torrent Group is set to acquire a majority stake in the IPL franchise from CVC Capital Partners, the current owners. This development marks a significant change in the Indian Premier League’s business landscape, positioning Torrent as the new driving force behind one of the league’s most successful teams.

Let’s have a look into more details: IPL 2025

While CVC Capital Partners has held ownership of Gujarat Titans since 2021, winning the franchise with a record breaking bid of Rs 5,625 crore, they are now set to cede control to Torrent Group. Torrent, a giant in the pharmaceutical and energy sectors, had previously expressed strong interest in owning an IPL team but was outbid by CVC during the 2021 auction. Their initial bid of Rs 4,653 crore fell short, but now, three years later, Torrent is poised to become the majority stakeholder in Gujarat Titans.

The deal, which is reportedly informal at the moment, will only be finalized once the IPL’s lock-in period for new teams ends in February 2025. While Torrent will hold a majority stake, CVC is expected to retain a significant minority share in the franchise, ensuring that they remain involved in the team’s operations.

Adani Group Bows Out of the Race

Interestingly, the Adani Group was also in the race to acquire Gujarat Titans, but the conglomerate decided to step back due to the franchise’s soaring valuation. Valued at over $1 billion, Gujarat Titans have seen their worth skyrocket in recent years, driven by the IPL’s growing media rights and sponsorship revenue.

This isn’t the first time Adani has pursued ownership of the Titans. Back in 2021, the Adani Group placed a bid of Rs 5,100 crore, narrowly losing out to CVC. However, with the group now focusing on its core industries like power and ports, it seems the high price tag has led them to reconsider their interest in IPL team ownership.

Gujarat Titans: From Newcomers to Powerhouse

Despite being one of the newer teams in the IPL, Gujarat Titans have made an immediate impact. Led by Hardik Pandya, the Titans stormed into the IPL spotlight by winning the title in their debut season in 2022. Their performance in the 2023 season was equally strong, as they made it to the finals, solidifying their status as one of the top teams in the league.

However, their 2024 season did not go as planned, with the team finishing eighth in the standings. While fans may have been disappointed by the sudden drop in form, the upcoming ownership change could bring fresh energy and resources to the franchise, positioning them for a strong comeback in IPL 2025.

What This Means for IPL Valuations

The anticipated acquisition by Torrent Group reflects the rapidly increasing valuations of IPL franchises. With media rights and sponsorship revenue surging, IPL team valuations have reached new heights. According to industry estimates, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to generate Rs 50,000 crore between 2023 and 2027 from these revenue streams, which are shared between the board and the franchises.

For Torrent, acquiring a majority stake in a high-profile team like Gujarat Titans not only represents a major business opportunity but also highlights their commitment to expanding their footprint in the sports industry. CVC, known for its investments in LaLiga, Premiership Rugby, and Volleyball World, will continue to hold a significant minority share in Gujarat Titans, ensuring continuity and expertise in managing sports franchises.

BCCI Approval Awaited

Like all major deals in the IPL, the sale of Gujarat Titans’ majority stake will require approval from the BCCI. Given the IPL’s exclusive nature, changes in team ownership are rare, making this deal one of the most significant developments in recent IPL history. The BCCI’s stringent approval process ensures that any ownership transfer aligns with the league’s broader goals of maintaining competitiveness, financial stability, and transparency.

As IPL 2025 approaches, Gujarat Titans are on the verge of entering a new era. Torrent Group’s anticipated acquisition of a majority stake brings the promise of fresh leadership, resources, and ambition to the team. While CVC will remain involved, Torrent’s influence is expected to shape the future direction of the franchise.
