IPL 2024: MI vs DC – Match Preview, Prediction, Team News and Fantasy XI

In the 2024 IPL Match 20 slated at the Wankhede Stadium, the Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to challenge the Delhi Capitals (DC). MI is yet to secure a win in three games this season, while DC has managed one victory out of four matches. This day-night clash is scheduled to commence in Mumbai at 15:30 local time on Sunday, April 7th.

MI vs DC: Match Preview

MI has had a disappointing start to their IPL journey, facing defeats against Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals. However, the potential comeback of Suryakumar Yadav might offer a much-needed uplift to their team.

Facing the team currently positioned below them in the rankings, DC will be hopeful about clinching their second win of the tournament. Their bowlers will need to exhibit greater astuteness and diversity in this match, particularly following a lackluster performance against KKR in their previous outing.

Sunday’s double-header will commence with a match between the bottom-placed Mumbai Indians and the Delhi Capitals, both striving to reverse their fortunes. While MI is yet to taste victory, DC has only managed one win out of their four games. Additionally, both teams are entering the match on the back of comprehensive defeats.

A significant boost for the hosts could be the potential return of the world’s No. 1 T20I batsman, Suryakumar Yadav, who joined the squad for training for the first time on Friday after missing the initial matches of the season. His presence could inject much-needed firepower into Mumbai’s batting lineup if he receives clearance to play—a department where they require confidence, especially after being restricted to just 125 runs in their last match against Rajasthan Royals.

On the other hand, Delhi Capitals suffered a 106-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders, a performance that left their head coach Ricky Ponting “almost embarrassed.” However, a notable positive was Rishabh Pant’s consecutive half-centuries.

The IPL 2024 marks Pant’s comeback to professional cricket after a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. Despite a sluggish start to the season, Pant showcased quick fifties against Chennai Super Kings and KKR, appearing to bat with significant freedom. Besides David Warner, Pant poses a significant batting threat that Mumbai needs to be wary of.

Nevertheless, Mumbai boasts an in-form Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah, the standout bowler for Mumbai this season, having missed IPL 2023 due to injury, has dismissed Pant six times in 13 IPL games, more than any other bowler.

Pant has also struggled to score swiftly against Bumrah, striking at 111.62 against him.

With Akash Madhwal in their attack as well, Mumbai has the flexibility to utilize Bumrah strategically and reserve him for this crucial matchup. The outcome of this battle could significantly impact the game’s result.

MI vs DC: Pitch Report & Conditions

Wankhede Stadium is renowned for offering ideal conditions for batting. The pitch remains consistent throughout the entire 40 overs, with short boundaries providing ample scoring opportunities for batsmen. The presence of dew further aids chasing teams, making run-scoring more manageable. In the 110 IPL matches held at Wankhede Stadium, teams batting first have secured victory in 50 games, while chasing teams have emerged victorious in 60 encounters. The average first-innings total stands at 169 runs. Weather conditions for Sunday indicate no threat of rain, ensuring fans can anticipate a complete game.

Contrary to last year’s high-scoring trend at Wankhede, this match will witness the utilization of the same strip employed in the match against Royals. Not featured in IPL 2023, this pitch posed challenges for batsmen. Early seam movement and the pitch’s tendency to hold the ball as the match progressed made scoring runs a demanding task. As a result, expect batsmen to exert considerable effort in accumulating runs in this fixture.

MI vs DC: Head-to-head

In their head-to-head encounters spanning 33 matches, the Delhi Capitals have emerged victorious 15 times, while the Mumbai Indians have secured victory on 18 occasions. There have been no instances of matches ending with no result. Their rivalry dates back to their first encounter on 3 May 2008, with their most recent clash occurring on 11 April 2023.

MI vs DC: Team news and Impact Player Strategy

Mumbai Indians

If Suryakumar Yadav is available, Naman Dhir is expected to make room for him in the lineup. The strategy surrounding how Mumbai utilizes this impact player will be intriguing to observe. In the previous match, they introduced Dewald Brevis as the impact player as early as the conclusion of the first over, albeit he was dismissed for a golden duck. Brevis and Romario Shepherd are probable contenders for the role if Mumbai opts to bowl first, or in the event of early batting setbacks. Additionally, if they bat first, the inclusion of a sixth bowler could be considered.

Probable XII:

  1. Rohit Sharma
  2. Ishan Kishan (wk)
  3. Naman Dhir/Suryakumar Yadav
  4. Dewald Brevis/Romario Shepherd
  5. Tilak Varma

Delhi Capitals

Delhi Capitals might witness the return of Kuldeep Yadav to the squad after he missed their last two games due to a groin niggle. Kuldeep had a promising start to the season but was subsequently advised to rest. A final decision on his availability will be made after a fitness test, either on the eve of the game or on matchday. Additionally, Mitchell Marsh’s injury during the Capitals’ last game could pave the way for his compatriot Jake Fraser-McGurk to make his IPL debut.
