The Indian premiere League is the most popular tournament in India and the company owning the digital rights has always proved to be profitable. Jio Cinema which is owned by Reliance has decided to digitally stream the IPL matches in six languages absolutely free. Viacom18 digitally streamed the FIFA World Cup 2022 for free and gained the highest viewership. The matches were broadcast on Sports18 and Sports18 HD as well.
As per reports, Reliance Jio wants to break into the Indian market via live streaming the IPL matches for free. The app also live-streamed the FIFA World Cup in India without charging a single penny. Over 32 million people have watched the tournament through the app. The app will be showing the IPL 2023 games in 11 regional languages. Besides the app, Sports18 will be airing IPL absolutely free on the Jio TV app.
Viacom18 which is owned by Reliance bought the digital media rights if IPL from the period 2023-2027 for a huge amount of Rs 23,578 crore and tried out a lot of ways to implement the free streaming strategy for IPL. TV viewership significantly increased over the years on digital platforms and the Reliance Jio customers will have the advantage as they don’t need to pay extra for the Disney+Hotstar subscription.

Viacom18 desires to make Jio Cinema “that one” destination for sports. FIFA has already broken all the records after being streamed for free on the Jio Cinema. Currently, the app live-streams LaLiga for free too.
