iPhone 17 Pro Reportedly Set for Major Rear Camera Redesign

The iPhone 17 Pro models next year are said to receive a huge redesign, and it is especially the rear camera module that will be in the focus. The new supply chain leaks do appear to back up this huge shift, which was first reported by The Information.

iPhone 17 Pro to Feature Major Rear Camera Redesign, New Supply Chain Info Confirms

Previously, there had been a rumor suggesting that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max would use a rectangular rear camera bump aluminum design, deviating from the 3D glass attached to the existing machine. The bottom part of the bump, however, will still be made with glass in order to ensure that wireless charging is still possible. The “iPhone 17 Air” also has a large centered camera bump that only has one lens.

Renderings based on these details already popped up online, and a leaker on Weibo, known as Digital Chat Station, corroborated the change in the camera module. He, who has accurately leaked details of previous iPhone models, goes on to say that the exact configuration of the cameras is unknown, but the module will likely take on an elongated oval shape akin to what we will see in upcoming Android devices.

If accurate, the possible redesign would be one of the largest changes to Apple’s square camera bump since the first iPhone 11 introduced the square design to add a third Ultra Wide camera. This new look has since been a defining characteristic of how the iPhone has looked, all the way through to the iPhone 16.

However, the rumor has sparked speculation about whether Apple would take a step this far for a redesign. Populous leaker Ice Universe argued that getting rid of the headphone jack would require a complete redesign of the device’s internal layout, a process that could take a significant amount of time and experimentation before it could even be followed through. The camera module redesign is based on leaks and concept renders, and therefore the final design could change because Apple has not yet finalized its plans.
