Apple has a number of major redesigns and format changes in store for its iPhones in the next few years, according to a new report from The Wall Street Journal’s Aaron Tilley and Yang Jie. One notable point from the report is the anticipated arrival of the “iPhone 17 Air,” which will be ultrathin even by iPhone standards, with Page 2 further raising the example of thinner than any existing models.

The specific thickness is not mentioned but leaks are claiming that the gadget can be as thin as 5mm to 6.25mm while the iPhone 16 lineup has a 7.8mm thickness. This would make it the thinnest-ever iPhone, breaking the record currently held by the iPhone 6 which is 6.9mm.

As earlier leaks have suggested, the iPhone 17 Air would miss out on some Pro model-exclusive features from Apple. Among the notable compromises could be a pared-back camera system, though there are few details on what other features could be cut. With these updates in mind, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to have a lower price point than the current Pro models which start at $999 in the U.S.

Apple has two foldable devices under development alongside the iPhone 17 Air. One of these will be a foldable MacBook featuring an incredibly large 19-inch display, which could be Apple’s largest foldable device to date. The other is a potential inward-folding iPhone. The foldable iPhone will feature a screen that’s possibly bigger than the iPhone 16 Pro Max’s 6.9-inch display, and it could be released sometime between 2026 and 2027.

However, Apple has encountered major hurdles in engineering the foldable iPhone, especially with the phone’s hinge and top layer that protects the screen. The company first considered an outward-facing foldable but ultimately opted for a larger foldable internal display. These foldable phones have gushed development over the past several years and will start to become available in the next few years.
