Here’s the Early Life and Career of Bhanu Athaiya on the Ocassion of International Womens Day 2025

Bhanu Athaiya was born on April 28, 1929, in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Her passion for art led her to the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, where she excelled and won a gold medal. Initially, she worked as an illustrator for fashion magazines before stepping into the world of cinema.

She made her film debut in 1956 with CID, marking the beginning of an incredible journey in costume designing. Bhanu worked with some of Bollywood’s biggest names, including Guru Dutt, Yash Chopra, and Raj Kapoor. She started her career as a costume designer with Guru Dutt and went on to design outfits for iconic films like Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster.

Over the decades, she designed costumes for more than 100 films. Her work blended tradition with modernity, and she paid great attention to detail. Apart from winning an Oscar, she also received two National Film Awards for Best Costume Design. Some of her most notable works in later years include Lagaan (starring Aamir Khan) and Swades (starring Shah Rukh Khan).

Bhanu Athaiya’s big moment came in 1983 at the 55th Academy Awards when she won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for Gandhi. Richard Attenborough’s film was a grand depiction of Mahatma Gandhi’s life, and Bhanu’s costumes played a crucial role in bringing authenticity to the story.

Recalling that historic night, Bhanu once shared, “The writer of the film was in the car with me on the way to the ceremony. He told me he felt I would win. Other designers at the Oscars also said I had a strong chance. When I asked them how they were so confident, they replied that the scale of my film was so grand that it was unmatched.”

When she took the stage to accept her award, she humbly said, “I thank Sir Richard Attenborough for drawing the world’s attention towards India. Thank you, Academy.” Her victory was a proud moment for India and a major milestone in Indian cinema.

Desire to Keep the Oscar Trophy Safe

In 2012, Bhanu Athaiya expressed her wish to return her Oscar trophy to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for safekeeping. She was concerned about its security in India, as many awards had gone missing in the past.

Speaking to the BBC, she explained, “The biggest question is about the safety of the trophy; many awards have disappeared in India before. I have enjoyed the award for so many years, but I want it to remain safe in the future. I have seen that many people keep their trophies in the Oscar office. American costume designer Edith Head also placed her eight Oscars there before she passed away.”

Bhanu believed that if her trophy was kept at the Academy, more people would be able to see it and appreciate her work.

Her Final Years and Legacy

Bhanu Athaiya spent the last few years of her life battling a brain tumor. She was bedridden for three years before passing away peacefully in her sleep on October 15, 2020.

Her contributions to cinema remain unmatched. She not only set a benchmark in costume design but also opened doors for many Indian artists in the international film industry. Her work in Gandhi continues to be celebrated, and her legacy lives on through the countless films she worked on.

On this Women’s Day, let’s celebrate Bhanu Athaiya’s incredible journey and the impact she left on the world of cinema. She was not just a costume designer; she was a pioneer who proved that Indian artists could shine on the global stage.
