Women have been in the vanguard of advancing social change, economic prosperity, and innovation throughout the Asia-Pacific area. Women throughout the area have demonstrated tenacity, leadership, and ingenuity in overcoming obstacles and forging a more inclusive and sustainable future. These women range from entrepreneurs and scientists to political leaders and grassroots activists.

International Women Day

The UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific is urging governments, corporations, civil society organizations, and people to increase their investments in women and girls on this International Women’s Day.

2024’s International Women’s Day: India, along with many other nations across the world, is celebrating International Women’s Day, or IWD, on March 8th. This day honors the rights and accomplishments that women have accrued over the years.

In contrast to popular belief, which links blue with boys and pink with girls, there is no correlation between these colors and how International Women’s Day is observed. Three unique colors—purple, green, and white—stand for this worldwide event honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political accomplishments of women.

Purple is an important color for global feminist movements and women’s marches. Have you ever wondered why this color was selected and what the movement represents with it? Please allow us to clarify.

International Women Day 2024: Why is purple chosen and what does it symbolise?

The colours purple, green, and white have special meaning on International Women’s Day, according to the International Women’s Day (IWD) website. The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom is credited with creating these colours in 1908. White denotes purity, Green symbolises optimism, and Purple stands for justice and dignity.

Emmeline Pankhurst founded the WSPU, a passionate branch of the British suffrage movement, in Manchester in 1903. With a primary goal of granting women the ability to vote in a country that had expressly forbidden them from doing so in 1832, the WSPU was a key player in the movement to support women’s suffrage.

The Significance of Purple Colour Movement of Feminists

The National Woman’s Party in the US adopted the purple, white, and gold colour scheme. The organization elaborated on the meaning of these colours in a newsletter that was released on December 6, 1913, saying that “Purple represents loyalty and steadfastness, while White represents purity, signifying the quality of our purpose.” Like the torch that illuminates our path, gold signifies pure, unwavering brightness and vitality.

White was frequently used in suffragist movement flags as a reaction against the anti-feminist stereotype of suffragists as ugly and masculine. Suffragettes wore all-white costumes and matching sashes in parades to challenge the perception of them in the media. These white gowns stood for the purity and femininity that were essential to the suffrage movement.
