Intel China has verified the impending 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S “Desktop” and Raptor Lake-HX “Laptop” CPU updates. Intel China went on to describe the entire incident on its Weibo account.
According to recent rumors, Intel’s Raptor Lake-S and Raptor Lake-HX upgrades would be part of the 14th Gen CPU family, while the Raptor Lake-U and Meteor Lake-P chips on the mobile side would be the first to reset things and use the brand new “Core” and “Core Ultra” branding.
While high-end desktop and laptop components will keep 14th-Gen branding, Meteor Lake-P, and Raptor Lake-U CPUs will reset and begin with 1st-Gen branding.
This is the first time that Intel China has publicly revealed that the 14th Gen Raptor Lake-S “Desktop” and Raptor Lake-HX “Laptop” refresh CPUs are true and will operate as an upgrade over the old processors.
The “Core Ultra” label will debut with the Meteor Lake series. The Raptor Lake-U lineup will use Core 3/5/7 branding without the “i”. The upcoming Raptor Lake HX/S update will keep the same naming scheme.
One thing to keep in mind is that the “Core Ultra” branding allows customers to distinguish between Meteor Lake and Raptor-Lake U Refresh, which will be introduced in the same generation. As the name suggests, the term “Ultra” connotes great performance; thus, it will be used for the superior Meteor Lake series.
Beginning in 2H 2023, all client products, including Raptor Lake-S desktops and Raptor Lake/Meteor Lake mobile CPUs, will utilize the new naming convention, with the Meteor Lake CPU family being the first to do so.
