Intel Meteor Lake CPUs will remortedly feature Ray Tracing Support

Intel may have confirmed ray tracing compatibility for their Meteor Lake CPUs with Xe-HPG TGPU in a recent commit posted on GitHub. The Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs, which are expected to launch in 2023, will include a number of novel technologies, such as whole new hybrid cores, integrated graphics employing tiled designs, and a VPU accelerator that we previously covered.

A thorough research released by Coelacanth-Dream indicates that the GPU found on Intel Meteor Lake CPUs has been identified as an IGC Xe-HPG device (Intel Graphics Compiler). Since it will be employing the same architecture, we can presume that it will be similar to the current DG2 or Alchemist GPUs, however that isn’t totally true.

The DPAS (Dot Product Accumulate Systolic) commands carried out through the XMX units are not supported by the Meteor Lake GPU, also known as the tGPU (Tiled-GPU), because it is supposedly not equipped with those. In a previous report, we discussed how the graphics unit in Intel’s Meteor Lake CPU will lack XMX, leading in lesser feature-level support for technologies like XeSS, but it would instead have partial FP64 support, which has been lacking in Intel iGPUs for the past few generations.

The more intriguing information is that hardware-level raytracing capability is supposedly coming to Intel Meteor Lake CPUs’ TGPU (Xe-MTL). Since the design hasn’t changed, at least in terms of ray tracing, the TGPU is said to provide an equivalent level of ray-tracing capability to Alchemist and Ponte Vecchio GPUs.

Intel Meteor Lake Mobility CPU Lineup Expected Features:

  • Triple-Hybrid CPU Architecture (P/E/LP-E Cores)
  • Brand New Redwood Cove (P-Cores)
  • Brand New Crestmont (E-Cores)
  • Up To 14 Cores (6+8) For H/P Series & Up To 12 Cores (4+8) For U Series CPUs
  • Intel 4 Process Node For CPU, TSMC For tGPU
  • Intel ‘Xe-MTL’ GPU With Up To 192/128 EUs
  • Up To LPDDR5X-7467 & DDR5-5200 Support
  • Up To 96 GB DDR5 & 64 GB LPDDR5X Capacities
  • Intel VPU For AI Inferencing With Atom Cores
  • x8 Gen 5 Lanes For Discrete GPU (Only H-Series)
  • Triple x4 M.2 Gen 4 SSD Support
  • Four Thunderbolt 4 Ports

Ray-tracing capability will not be available on Intel’s Meteor Lake CPU tiled-GPU as the first integrated graphics device. Since about a year ago, AMD has been selling Ryzen 6000 “Rembrandt” APUs with RDNA 2 iGPUs. This will be Intel’s first integrated graphics with ray tracing capabilities, although we’re hoping for partial XeSS or AI-level upsampling support. Technology like FSR 2.0 can really help produce playable FPS in gaming games, as we have seen with AMD’s APUs, and that would be absolutely wonderful for mobile gamers.

The “Intel 4” process node, along with a variety of 3rd party IPs/process nodes for the remaining tiles, will be used by the Intel 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs when they debut in the second half of 2023.
