The press who attended Intel’s ‘Vision’ event were shown the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPU in regular and high-density die versions. The dies provide a closer look at the blue team’s next-generation processor, which will power laptops and desktop computers in 2023.
At the end of last month, Intel stated that their 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs, which are set to arrive in 2023, have achieved Power-On. Meteor Lake, which, as expected, comes in a multi-tile design and uses core IPs made at both Intel and TSMC, has now received its first close-up look. During the post-processing stage, these are then combined and shipped as a single package.
There are two separate 14th Gen Meteor Lake kits
The normal package is the first, while the high-density package is the second. One of the most notable changes between the 12th Gen Alder Lake and 14th Gen Meteor Lake packages is that the latter does not include a PCH die, instead of placing it on the same chip in a tiled architectural design. If you look closely, you can see that the primary die is made up of at least four tiles, each of which can offer additional tiles, which is necessary for the GPU, which is based on a new tGPU (Tile-GPU) design.
Chiplets, or Tiles as Intel seems to call them, will shape Intel’s next-generation chip portfolio, including both CPUs and GPUs. Chipzilla also showed off its Sapphire Rapids Quad-Tile packages in both HBM and non-HBM varieties, as well as a close-up of their flagship GPU, the Ponte Vecchio with Xe-HPC architecture, in addition to Meteor Lake.
During the ‘Intel Vision Event,’ both Sapphire Rapids and Ponte Vecchio were confirmed to be shipping to Argonne National Laboratory to power their forthcoming Aurora Supercomputer, which is expected to be operational this year.
With the whole new tiling architecture concept, the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs will be a game-changer
The new CPUs will be based on the ‘Intel 4’ process node and will deliver a 20% increase in performance per watt thanks to EUV technology. They are expected to tape out in 2H 2022. The first Meteor Lake CPUs are slated to ship in the first half of 2023, with availability following later that year.
Intel claims that the 14th Gen Meteor Lake CPUs will have a fresh new tiled architecture, which essentially suggests that the corporation has decided to go full chiplet. The Meteor Lake CPUs have three significant titles. The IO Tile, SOC Tile, and Compute Tile are all available. The CPU Tile and the GFX Tile make up the Compute Tile.
The CPU Tile will have a revolutionary hybrid core design that will give better throughput while using less power, while the graphics tile will be unlike anything we’ve seen before.
Meteor Lake CPUs will use a tiled Arc graphics-powered GPU, according to Raja Koduri, making it a totally new kind of graphics on a chip. It is classified as a tGPU (Tiled GPU / Next-Gen Graphics Engine) because it is neither an iGPU nor a dGPU.
The new Xe-HPG graphics architecture will be used in the Meteor Lake CPUs, allowing for enhanced performance while maintaining the same degree of power efficiency as conventional integrated GPUs. This will also enable improved support for DirectX 12 Ultimate and XeSS, which are currently only available in the Alchemist lineup.
