Intel Core Ultra ‘Meteor Lake PS’ and Core ‘Raptor Lake PS’ CPUs coming soon
Intel has announced the two latest Core Ultra Meteor Lake PS and Core Raptor Lake PS CPUs targeting Edge applications. The CPUs are based on the LGA 1851 and LGA 1700 socketed platforms and were unveiled during Embedded World 2024. The new CPUs are part of Intel’s new Edge portfolio announced in the event intended to cater to new AI workloads.
The All New Intel Core Ultra CPUs
The PS portfolio integrates Intel’s Arc iGPUs and Intel AI Boost NPUs to run on the LGA socketed platform. Generally, the Intel PS CPU portfolio comprises two primary families; the high-end Intel Core Ultra based on the Meteor Lake series and the Core family based on the Raptor Lake series.
The Intel Core Ultra is essentially an LGA socketed version of the earlier Meteor Lake CPU family launched for mobile devices. These CPUs will exclusively serve as socketed Meteor Lake CPUs, with the DIY segment receiving the Arrow Lake-S treatment.
Specifications reveal at least 9 SKUs, including four Meteor Lake PS 45W and five Meteor Lake PS 15W chips. The flagship Intel Core Ultra 7 (Series 1) 165HL features 16 cores and 22 threads in a 6+8+2 configuration, with 24 MB of L3 cache, clock speeds up to 5.0 GHz, and scalability up to 65W. The Alchemist Arc iGPU features 8 Xe-cores with 128 execution units running at 2.3 GHz, supporting up to 20 PCIe 4.0 lanes.
The introduction of the LGA 1851 socket marks a significant step, powering Intel’s next-gen desktop CPU platforms like Arrow Lake. Supporting DDR5-5600 memory and TBT4 IO, the socket measures 45 by 37.5mm. The Intel Core Ultra “Meteor Lake PS” CPUs is claimed to offer up to 5.02x faster GPU performance, 3.13x faster AI performance, and 3.85x lower power consumption for AI and graphics workloads compared to the previous generation.
On the other hand, the Intel Core “Raptor Lake PS” CPUs, part of the Raptor Lake PS series, feature a higher number of GPU cores than standard Raptor Lake-S CPUs. The new CPUs will provide up to 2.57 times quicker graphics performance when compared to 13th-gen CPUs. Intel will also launch its newest embedded Atom Processors under the x7000RE series, which is forecast to be substantially better than the Atom Processors x6000RE series for Edge computing platforms.
Despite the launch of the Raptor Lake PS and Atom CPU families, Intel may still hope to have Core Ultra “Meteor Lake PS” CPUs by the second quarter of 2024, according to the sources, with more information to follow. There will be 6 SKUs of Intel’s Arc GPUs to Edge applications, 4 of which are slightly changed versions of the current chips, with other models still confirming the VRAM capacities and bandwidth before the release, according to the firm.
