Intel has officially announced an upcoming upgrade to its 14th Gen Core mobile series, introducing the new 55W Core-HX models. This announcement hints at Intel’s plan to unveil at least three product series in its upcoming December launch event. These include the Core (Ultra) 100 Meteor Lake/Raptor Lake Refresh, 5th Gen Xeon Scalable “Emerald Rapids,” and the 14th Gen Core-HX series designed for high-end laptops. The flagship SKU among the HX lineup is speculated to be the Core i9-14900HX.

The Fastest Mobile CPU: Intel Core i9-14900HX

According to information leaked from a Geekbench test, the CPU is anticipated to feature 24 cores and 32 threads, mirroring the configuration of the desktop 14900K. However, the mobile variant boasts a default TDP of 55W, a departure from the 125W observed in its desktop counterpart. The Geekbench results, obtained from testing on a new Acer Predator system equipped with an RTX 4080 Laptop GPU, reveal an impressive performance score and frequency.

Further analysis of the detailed JSON data from the benchmark indicates that the CPU achieved a maximum frequency of 5763 MHz during testing. This suggests a potential maximum boost clock of up to 5.8 GHz, marking a 200 MHz boost over the i9-13980HX and a 400 MHz improvement over the i9-13900HX. Notably, there is no indication of the rumored 14980HX SKU, positioning the 14900HX as the anticipated new flagship in this series.

A preliminary comparison with publicly available data suggests that the i9-14900HX could emerge as the leading performer in Geekbench single-core and multi-core tests. The CPU has achieved impressive scores, with 2998 points in the single-core test and 17937 points in the multi-core test—marking the highest scores in the Notebookcheck ranking for mobile SKUs.

The 24-core CPU is just one of the four known models slated for release next month, and it’s conceivable that Intel may introduce additional SKUs. While the 14900HX and 14700HX tests have revealed a 400 MHz boost over their predecessors, the question remains whether this enhancement will be sufficient to outperform AMD’s Ryzen 7045HX Dragon Range series in gaming—a query that will be answered in the coming weeks.
