If you are following gaming industry updates and news, then you might be aware of the success of Insomniac. A game development studio of Sony, which is making its name lately for giving the best video games ever.
However, recently, shocking news started floating on the internet that it is facing cuts from Sony. Well, that’s something very odd, given that it’s the number one game development studio. In this article, we will dwell on this rumour. So without any further delays, let’s dive in.
Insomniac Facing Cuts From Sony
Sony has a quite good number of first-party PlayStation Studios developers; however, no one is as good as Insomniac. With its new entries given to the gaming community, this studio is shining very brightly.
Insomniac has produced some major hits repeatedly without taking a long break or even a long developmental time. Unlike other gaming studios that have made long developmental times a norm in the AAA gaming space.
If you remember, just a few days ago, there was a leak on Insomniac’s upcoming projects. This was after a ransomware attack on the game development studio, which leaked its confidential documents.
These documents provided a peek into the internal matters of Insomniac and Sony and their budget for upcoming projects. And these are just some prominent topics, there is much more.
According to these documents, Sony is significantly reliant on Insomniac Studios for its upcoming projects. And at least 6 titles are in the talk for the next years, with expectations of huge sales.
Now, it’s obvious given the great performance of the gaming studio that its resource demands must be fulfilled. However, it doesn’t seem the case and Ethan Gach of Kotaku has dived into the internal documents leaked earlier.
And to amaze everyone, it was found that Insomniac is under pressure from Sony to cut down on its costs. The cost of production for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was around $300 million. It is around three times more than that of the first Spider-Man game by Insomniac.
According to other reports, Insomniac’s future projects can be costlier than the current one ranging above $350 million. In this background reducing costs means a lot for the gaming studio.
Also, it is not just about the cost cutdown but also about the employee’s headcount. There are approximately 500 employees in Insomniac, and according to the gaming studio, it is expected to surpass it.
However, on the other hand, Sony has issued a directive that headcount shouldn’t exceed 470. And later it even issued notice to lay – off around 50 – 75 people from the studio.
It is interesting and shocking too, as Sony is making new records of its success. Whether it’s gaming consoles or video games, Sony is well–playing on all fronts.
