India had a fairly good year in sports. Some of the best players have given memorable performances that the country will never forget. From Neeraj Chopra’s victory at the World Athletics Championships to PV Sindhu’s historic CWG gold, the country has seen it all. Let’s have a look at India’s top 10 achievements in sports this year.

1. PV Sindhu wins Commonwealth Games Gold

PV Sindhu bagged her first CWG Gold after 13 years of her career. She defeated Canadian player Michele Li in the final to get it. Before, she won a bronze in Glasgow and a silver at Gold Coast before winning this gold. She is one of the top sports celebrities in India.

2. The Thomas Cup victory

The Thomas Cup win was one of the best ones in this lot. This was India’s first victory in the tournament. Conventionally, Indonesia has been winning them. With the hard work of Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and the duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy India finally won it. The Indian team defeated strong competitors like Malaysia and Denmark to reach the finale.

3. Neeraj Chopra won silver at World Championship

Indian javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra once again created history as he won the silver medal at the World Championships. His best throw was 88.13m which helped him secure the second spot. He also became the second player in history to achieve this after Anju Bobby George. Besides, he also bagged his first diamond League title in 2022.

4. India women’s won gold in Lawn Bowls

In CWG 2022, India won its first gold in Lawn Bowls. They defeated the South African team by 17-10 in the finale of the Women’s Fours event. Prominent players in the event were Lovely Choubey (lead), Pinki (second), Nayanmoni Saikia (third), and Rupa Rani Tirkey (skip).

5. Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal at the World Weightlifting championship

Mirabai Chanu never lets the country down as right after winning gold at the CWG, she bagged a silver at the World Weightlifting Championship. She got the medal with a 200 kg (87kg snatch + 113kg clean and jerk) effort. Earlier in 2017, she had won gold at the World Championships.

6. The Indian women’s team won FIH Nations Cup

The FIH Nations Cup is one of the best competitions for Hockey in the world. The Indian women won this reputed tournament that took place in Spain. With the victory, they got to be a part of the FIH Pro League in 2023-24. Defeating the Spain team was an achievement itself for India.

7. Satwik and Chirag’s bronze win at the World Championship

In August, Indian men Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were the first player in the world to win a medal in a men’s doubles competition at the World Championships. The dup beat defending champions Takuro Hoki and Yugo Kobayashi to win this.

8. Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat bagged bronze medals at the World Championships

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat are two of the best wrestlers of India and they got Bronze at the World Championships in 2022. The tournament is one of the hardest but these two made the country proud once again.

9. Sharath Kumar won 5 medals at Commonwealth Games

Sharath Kumar clinched three gold medals and a silver medal for India in 2022. His victories include gold medals in the men’s team, mixed doubles, and men’s singles events. He secured a silver medal in the men’s double category which was held in Birmingham.

10. Nikhat Zareen won gold in IBA Women’s World Boxing Championship

Nikhat Zareen recently won gold at the World Championship in Istanbul after she defeated Jitpong Jutamas from Thailand 5-0. She’s fifth Indian to acquire the world title. After the very popular Mary Kom, the Indian audience is looking forward to her achievements that she’ll unlock. Due to her latest success, she’s been given the title of “Queen of Indian boxing”.
