Riiohlang Dhar has become only the second-ever Indian female referee to be named in the list for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. The tournament will take place from October 10-November 3.

Dhar has been included in the 38-strong list, and could feature in the tournament based on the final roster of referees. The first woman to officiate in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup was Uvena Fernandes, who was on duty in the FIFA U17 Women’s World 2016 held in Jordan.

“My appointment for the World Cup has come as a great honour for me,” said Riiohlang, who works for the Meghalaya police department.

“I have to work harder to live up to FIFA’s expectations. I will also keep in mind that I will be there as a representative of India. I will do everything to keep India’s flag high,” said the assistant referee.

Dhar has been a referee since moving on from her playing career in 2009, and could now make history with a massive step in her career. She also thanked the AIFF and her employers for the massive achievement, and indicated that a lot of progress had been achieved in the development of female referees in the country.
