Indian PC Market Declines by 30.1% YoY in 1Q23, Says IDC

The traditional PC market in India, including desktops, notebooks, and workstations, experienced a significant decline of 30.1% YoY in 1Q23, shipping only 2.99 million units, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC).

While the demand for desktops remained positive, the notebook category saw a decline of 40.8% YoY. The consumer segment dropped by 36.1% YoY due to slowing demand and low market sentiment, while the commercial segment declined by 25.1% YoY as enterprises and SMEs reduced or delayed procurement.

However, there were positive signs in the government and education segments. Government procurement led to a 25.2% YoY growth, and the education segment grew by 65.6% YoY due to the fulfilment of the Gujarat education order. Premium notebooks (>US$1,000) experienced significant declines in both the commercial and consumer segments, mainly driven by inventory correction of Apple MacBooks and low enterprise demand. The online channel also struggled, declining by 42.4% YoY in 1Q23.

Bharath Shenoy, Senior Market Analyst at IDC India, expects the consumer market to gradually recover from June-July, driven by back-to-college demand and aggressive online sales during the festive months in Q3/Q4.
