The Day 1 of second test between India and new Zealand started today in Wankhede stadium, Mumbai. India chose to bat first. Mayank Agrawal hit a century which helped India reach 221/4 in 70 overs against the Black Caps.

This was Agarwal’s fourth Test hundred and Wankhede stadium’s 25th test century. The century came off in just 196 balls with lots of fours and sixes. 13 fours and 3 sixes to be precise. The top order batters Mayank Agarwal and Wriddhiman Saha had a good partnership, the former scoring over hundred runs and the later accompanying him by scoring 25 out of 55 balls.

This isn’t the first century scored by Agarwal. Earlier he had scored his second double century that is 243 against Bangladesh. he’s the first Indian opener against new Zealand to score a century in the last 7 years.

The last time a top order batter scored a century against New Zealand team was Shikhar Dhawan in the year 2014. Agarwal also created a record by hitting this century in the home series in the past 11 years. The last Indian player to do this was Virender Sehwag at Ahmedabad in 2011 when he made 173 runs.

Mayank Agarwal along with Shubman Gill gave the Indian team a steady start with a partnership of 80 runs for first wicket. Both played well but Agarwal established dominance in the next few hours.

Shuban Gill made 44 runs, Cheteshwar pujara and Virat Kohli both got out at 0 but Mayank Agarwal remained unbeaten. He had two half century partnerships in today’s match- Shreyas Iyer and Wriddhiman Saha. In just 118 balls he scored 50 runs and escalated the team score in the final session.

Skipper Virat Kohli got dismissed in an LBW and its quite controversial. The replay made it hard to conclude if Kohli was actually dismissed. Ex England skipper Michael Vaughan feels it wasn’t an out. The online world had mixed reactions.
