AFC Asian Cup 2023: India vs Australia – Tactical Analysis & Positives for India to look at

Many express the idea that hope can have both positive and negative aspects, and this idea was vividly demonstrated in the recent football match between India and Australia. Despite the Indian players showcasing exceptional skills and defending their goal with great determination, the Socceroos ultimately emerged as the superior team.

Australia fielded a lineup that adhered to expectations, with no surprises among the selected players. The notable highlight was the return of captain and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who had recovered from a facial bone fracture sustained in December, securing his place back in the goal.

India’s lineup, on the other hand, comprised a mix of anticipated and unforeseen selections. Among the attention-grabbing choices was Deepak Tangri, set for a challenging debut on the national team stage with the Blue Tigers in a continental match against one of the top teams in Asian football.

Tactical Battles Unfold: Australia’s Dominance and India’s Resilient Defensive Tactics

As anticipated, the game commenced, and Australia sought to assert their dominance in play from the outset.

Taking charge of possession, the Socceroos adopted a 2-3-5 formation when in control, with an interesting tactic of inverting both their full-backs, G. Jones and A. Behich. This arrangement created a three-man midfield alongside Keanu Baccus, who operated as the central pivot. The tactical inversion allowed J. Irvine to venture forward, assuming a box-to-box attacking role without heavy involvement in the build-up. Boyle and Goodwin maintained width on the right and left flanks, respectively, enabling C. Metcalfe and Irvine to lend support to their attacking moves within the box. It’s worth noting that Irvine and Goodwin frequently swapped positions, affording Goodwin the freedom to operate in the left half-spaces as well.

To counter Australia’s approach, India adopted a sturdy 4-4-2 low-block. Despite Australia enjoying greater possession and showcasing effective ball movement, the overall play remained static, making it challenging to break through and create openings in India’s defensive block. The compact defensive structure denied any significant space between the lines, limiting the Socceroos’ options. As a result, the predominant strategy for Australia involved playing the ball out wide and attempting crosses back into the box, with the hope of connecting with an Australian head.

According to the post-match press conference by Australian coach Graham Arnold, he suggested that the excitement of participating in the tournament might have affected his team’s composure in the first half. Adding to their challenges was the frustration of being unable to convert any of their 14 shots into goals, despite controlling the ball. This meant that, although the Socceroos dominated possession, they struggled to create meaningful opportunities against India’s goal.

Interestingly, the best chance of the half arguably came for India when a looping cross by Nikhil Poojary caught Harry Souttar off guard, providing Sunil Chhetri with an opportunity for a header at goal. Unfortunately, Chhetri narrowly missed the target.

The Sunil Chhetri header represented India’s sole touch of the ball inside the Australian box, highlighting the formidable defense of the 2015 champions. Attacking against Australia proved to be a challenging and nearly insurmountable task for the Blue Tigers.

Throughout the 90 minutes of play, India only completed four open-play passes into the Australian defensive third. The team faced difficulties in transitioning out of their defensive third, encountering strong opposition from the Socceroos who executed effective pressing and counter-pressing tactics. Australia’s physical prowess played a crucial role in winning the majority of second balls in the midfield, further complicating India’s attempts to establish control.

The Australian press exerted consistent pressure on India, causing notable challenges for the Blue Tigers. This strategy even resulted in arguably the best chance for Australia in the first half, with Gurpreet’s clearance under pressure finding the yellow and greens, putting India in a vulnerable position.

Australia’s pressing tactics aimed to force India into playing long balls, facilitating easier recovery of second balls. This approach nearly led to a goal when the wingers and strikers pressured Indian full-backs immediately upon receiving the ball. The well-timed and effective execution of the press forced India to retreat and play long passes to alleviate the mounting pressure.

The success of Australia’s press is evident in the high number of turnovers they induced, recovering the ball 11 times in India’s defensive third compared to India’s one. Notably, the majority of these turnovers were initiated by the wings. Despite a frustrating half for Australia and a commendable display of pride and bravery from India, the teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

India surpassed expectations, particularly in their defense against set-pieces, notably corners. Given Australia’s aerial advantage, it was crucial for India to neutralize these situations, and they achieved this commendably.

Australia earned a total of 14 corners throughout the game, while India had none. Despite the disparity, the Indian defense held firm. Gurpreet played a proactive role by coming out to claim balls, and Sandesh demonstrated excellent aerial prowess by contesting every challenging delivery. The Indian defensive unit ensured that Australia gained no advantage from these set-piece situations.

Out of the 14 corners Australia had, 13 were delivered into the box, but only four saw an Australian player making the first contact. This impressive defensive performance highlighted that, despite facing taller opponents, the Indian defenders stood tall and resolute.

Half-Time Reflections and Second-Half Surge: Australia’s Composure and India’s Fading Resistance

The halftime team talk proved crucial for the Socceroos, as they emerged more composed and focused in the second half, putting India under sustained pressure for the remaining 45 minutes. Despite India’s resilient defense initially holding strong, the resistance began to wane as they struggled to close gaps, and Australia found their rhythm.

Australia’s movements improved, particularly with full-backs engaging more widely, especially down India’s right flank. This strategic shift isolated Goodwin with Manvir, creating confusion and openings in the Indian box. The breakthrough came when Gurpreet’s save was promptly capitalized on by Irvine.

Graham Arnold further strengthened his side by making strategic substitutions between the 60th and 70th minutes, introducing Silvera, McGree, Bos, and Fornaroli. In the 72nd minute, Australia doubled their lead as McGree, released by Silvera, found Bos open at the far post, scoring with his first touch of the game.

India’s substitutions came after the second goal, with Liston, Akash Mishra, Thapa, and Mahesh entering in the final 15 minutes. Vikram Partap Singh made his National Team debut for the Blue Tigers in the 89th minute.

Ultimately, the expected outcome unfolded. The promising first-half performance faded as the Socceroos showcased their dominance in the second half. While India has made progress, the 2-0 defeat highlights the challenge of competing against the top teams in Asian football, represented by the benchmark set by the Socceroos. The scoreline, 4-0 in 2011 and 2-0 in 2024, reflects progress, but there’s acknowledgment that more is needed to compete with the elite of Asian football.

Positives for India

Defensive Prowess Against Set-Pieces

India showcased impressive defensive skills, particularly in dealing with set-pieces, notably corners. Despite Australia’s aerial advantage, the Indian defense, led by Gurpreet and Sandesh, successfully nullified 14 corners, allowing only four instances where an Australian player made the first contact.

Resilient First-Half Performance

In the first half, India demonstrated resilience in their defensive efforts, successfully holding off Australia and entering halftime deadlocked at 0-0. The defensive structure limited Australia’s options and frustrated their attempts to create meaningful opportunities.

Handling the Australian Press

Despite Australia’s effective pressuring tactics, India managed to navigate the challenges, especially in the first half, where the teams entered halftime without conceding. The defensive strategies, including the 4-4-2 low-block, contributed to limiting Australia’s progress and opportunities.

Competing Against a Strong Opponent

India’s ability to compete against a strong opponent like Australia, even if the match ended in a 2-0 defeat, reflects progress. The first-half performance, marked by defensive solidity and the limited chances created, indicates a level of competitiveness against one of the top teams in Asian football.
