India have extended national team head coach Igor Stimac’s contract until 2026, after a run of impressive performances. The team recently lost to World Cup participants Saudi Arabia at the Round of 16 of the 2023 Asian Games in China.
However, they were able to win silverware in the form of the Intercontinental Cup and the SAFF Championship earlier this year, in the buildup to the continental tournament.
Igor Stimac signs new contract with India with option for further extension
The new deal that Stimac has signed includes the option of a further extension for two years if India can make it to Round 3 of the World Cup qualifiers. But, the Croatian’s immediate challenge with the Blue Tigers will be in the Merdeka Cup to be held in Malaysia in the upcoming international break.
Igor Stimac and the AIFF have had their differences in recent months, owing to the short duration of national team camps and senior players not being released by ISL clubs. But, his passion for the growth of Indian football has been unwavering since he took over in 2019.
There has been consistent improvement under Stimac including the style of play, achievements and the growth of the sport. And with the new deal, the board has entrusted the 56-year-old to lead their men’s national team into an important few years ahead.
