The Indian cricket team needed to win the 4-match Test series BGT by 3-0 or 3-1 against Australia. India started the Border Gavaskar Trophy series with a dominating performance as they defeated Australia with ease in the first two Tests. However, Steve Smith’s men made a stunning comeback and won the third Test which meant India must win the fourth Test to qualify for the World Test Championship final on their won. If not, they would need help from the Kiwis to qualify.
The 5th day of the 4th Test of the BGT is going on at the time of writing this article. Both the teams have batted brilliantly and it heading towards a draw in all probability which would end the series with a 2-1 scoreline. But this wouldn’t have been enough for India to qualify for the WTC final.
However, even before the match between India and Australia ended, it has been confirmed that India has qualified alongside Australia for the WTC final, thanks to New Zealand. Kane Williamson played a fantastic knock to beat Sri Lanka in the last ball. This means India cannot go down below the second spot in the World Test Championship table and will now play the WTC final 2023 against Australia.

India had qualified for the inaugural WTC final 2021 as well but unfortunately lost against Kane Williamson’s New Zealand. But things have changed this time as Kane Williamson’s New Zealand has helped India to qualify for the WTC final 2023.
The WTC final 2023 will be played on neutral ground at The Oval in London. The match for the World Test Championship mace will start on 7th June 2023.
