The road to Lord’s just got a lot steeper for Shubman Gill’s Test side. After a rough patch in home conditions against South Africa, India now find themselves needing something close to a perfect run just to keep their World Test Championship final dreams alive.

## Where India Currently Stand

India sit fifth on the WTC 2025-27 points table with a points percentage of 48.15, a position that took a significant hit after suffering a 0-2 home defeat to South Africa. To realistically reach the final, they’ll need to push that percentage up to somewhere between 64 and 68 per cent — a target that leaves almost no margin for error.

## WTC 2025-27 Final: The Road Ahead for India

| Series | Matches | Opponent Strength |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Sri Lanka (Away) | 2 Tests | Must win both, no losses/draws affordable |
| New Zealand (Away) | 2 Tests | NZ beat India 3-0 at home last time |
| Australia (Home) | 5 Tests | Border-Gavaskar Trophy |

## The Bottom Line: Seven From Nine

With nine Test matches remaining across three series, India need to win at least seven to have a genuine shot at the final. That journey begins immediately with a two-match series in Sri Lanka, where anything short of a clean sweep would make qualification significantly harder. The tour to New Zealand in October adds further danger, given the Black Caps’ recent historic series win on Indian soil, before a blockbuster five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home against Australia closes out the cycle.

## Why It Matters

A points percentage this demanding means every session, not just every match, could end up mattering in India’s qualification race. Full WTC standings and fixtures are available on the [official ICC website](https://www.icc-cricket.com/rankings/mens/team-rankings/test).
