India Mpox Latest News
Following the announcement on September 23 that India was the third non-African nation to record a case of clade 1b Mpox, the Union Health Ministry released an advisory on Thursday. The warning against the Mpox infection, which was given to all states and union territories, stated that “Clinical presentation of Mpox clade I in adults remains similar to clade II.”
It is significant to remember that clade I infections may have a higher rate of complications than clade II infections. In an advice dated September 26, the Department of Health and Family Welfare directed that any suspected cases of Mppox be isolated and that stringent steps be taken to prevent and control infections.
Together with a list of testing-ready laboratories, the Health and Family Welfare Department has also supplied clinical management protocols, infection prevention and control procedures, and a risk communication plan.
India Mpox Update
On August 14 of this year, the World Health Organization designated the Mpox disease epidemic as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The International Health Regulations, 2005 permit the WHO to link mpox illness to PHEIC for the second time
The ministry gave the states instructions to evaluate the state and district levels of public health readiness at health facilities. In addition, the Ministry of Health directed officials to guarantee that hospitals establish isolation units to handle both suspected and proven cases. The creation of an augmentation strategy and the provision of qualified human resources in these facilities are among the other prerequisites for the required logistics.
“The 2024 PHEIC is related to MPox virus clade I, which is more virulent and more transmissible than Mpox clade II,” the announcement stated further. The advice states that any patient who exhibits symptoms that could be mistaken for Mumps should send samples from skin lesions to the approved labs as soon as possible. Patients whose tests come back positive should have their samples forwarded to specific labs and ICMR-NIV so that the clade can be identified by genome sequencing.
