What is Mpox?

Mpox is a viral infection that affects both humans and animals. It begins with flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and fatigue. As the infection progresses, it leads to the development of characteristic pus-filled lesions on the skin. The illness can last anywhere from two to four weeks.

The current outbreak in India is linked to the Clade 1b strain, known for being more virulent. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this strain has a mortality rate of about 3.6%, with children being particularly vulnerable.

Transmission and Prevention

M pox is primarily transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated materials. To prevent the spread of the virus, it is crucial to avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms such as rashes or pustules. Frequent hand washing and not sharing personal items also help reduce the risk of infection.

The WHO advises against engaging in sexual contact with unfamiliar individuals and emphasizes the importance of maintaining personal hygiene.

  • Pus-filled lesions

If you or someone you know exhibits these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical advice promptly.

Vaccination and Treatment of Monkey Pox

While there is no specific treatment approved for Mpox, supportive care and pain management can help those affected by the virus. Vaccines developed for smallpox have shown efficacy against Mpox, and the WHO recommends vaccines such as MVA-BN, LC16, and ACAM2000 for protection.

In the United States, vaccines like JYNNEOS® and ACAM2000 are available and are known to reduce the severity if administered within 14 days of exposure. It is advised to receive two doses for optimal protection, with a four-week gap between them.

India Mpox Cases: Global and Local Response

The outbreak in India is part of a larger scenario currently affecting parts of Africa, where thousands have been infected. In response, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune have begun sample testing to monitor and manage the situation.

UNICEF has also stepped up efforts by issuing an emergency tender for Mpox vaccines to ensure countries have immediate access and to boost production.

While the detection of M pox in India is concerning, it is crucial to remember that with proper precautions and awareness, the spread can be controlled. Health authorities are actively monitoring the situation, and by following guidelines, maintaining hygiene, and seeking vaccination, we can protect ourselves and our communities.

Remain vigilant but calm, and stay informed through reliable sources to navigate this outbreak safely.
