The government will soon come up with a plan to get the nation on a good semiconductor journey for the next 10 years, according to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, who made the announcement on Saturday in an effort to boost semiconductor manufacturing in the nation.

Can India be a new hub for semiconductor manufacturing?

“We made the commitment to devote a significant amount of time and effort over the next fourteen to sixteen months to learning from specialists across the world and developing a program that will help the nation achieve a thriving semiconductor future over the following 10 years,” Vaishnaw said.

Does India actually have a manufacturing industry for semiconductors?

On January 1, 2022, the PM gave his approval for the Semicon India plan. With an investment of ₹76,000 crores, the government began the Semicon India Initiative in December 2021.

The program aims to assist India’s ecosystem for semiconductor and display manufacturing to grow. “We made a promise to you as your government, and this 14–16-month term started on March 1 of this year. In the upcoming weeks, you’ll learn some positive news,” added Union Minister He emphasized that international businesses have expressed a strong interest in India’s semiconductor production, which is critical to addressing the nation’s strategic demands. “As a result of the large number of applications that have been received for the program, “global corporations have demonstrated interest in semiconductor manufacture, which is vital to satisfy the strategic demands of the country,” Vaishnaw stated last year.

In 2023, the minister informed the parliamentary consultative committee that numerous state governments, including those of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, are in negotiations with the firms to establish semiconductor manufacturing units or fab complexes. The goal of the Semicon India Program is to offer companies and consortiums that work in Silicon Semiconductor Fabs, Display Fabs, Compound Semiconductors, Silicon Photonics, Sensors (including MEMS) Fabs, Semiconductor Packaging (ATMP / OSAT), and Semiconductor Design an alluring incentive support system.
