The Indian government has allowed the men’s national team to compete at the 2023 Asian Games, relaxing their previous restrictions. The Indian team had been prevented from participating as they were ranked low. But, after protests and requests from the players, coaches and fans, the decision has now been overturned by the sports ministry.
India have won three tournaments this very year, first with the Tri-Nation Cup in March, and then with the Intercontinental Cup. Their most recent achievement was the SAFF Championship, after defeating Kuwait in the finals at Bengaluru.
India to participate at 2023 Asian Games after government decision overturned
“Good news for Indian football lovers!
“Our national football teams, both Men’s and Women’s, are set to participate in the upcoming Asian Games.
“The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, has decided to relax the rules to facilitate participation of both the teams, which were not qualifying as per the existing criterion,” Anurag Thakur’s Twitter post read.
“Keeping in mind their latest performances in the recent times, the Ministry decided to grant the relaxation.
“I am sure they will put their best foot forward in the Asian Games and make our country proud.”
The circular released earlier said that only the top eight ranked teams would be sent to the Asian Games. However, India’s men’s team is 18th in the continent, while the women’s team is ranked 11th. Reports suggested that the differences between IOA president PT Usha and AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey were the main reason behind the football teams not being sent.
Head coach Igor Stimac also wrote an open letter to PM Narendra Modi allowing the teams to travel to China for the games. And now, with the decision being overturned, both football teams will be participating at the 2023 Asian Games in China later this year.
