India defeated Great Britain in the quarter finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to progress into the last four of the competition for the first time in 41 years. The scoreline read 3-1 at the end of an intense four quarters which saw both teams have a player each being sent off.

All the goals from India were from open play, and they won no penalty corners during the entire game. Dilpreet and Gurjant Singh were the first to strike for India as they managed to score two goals within the initial stages of the second quarter. They held onto the scoreline until half time.

The third quarter brought out a very offensive side of Great Britain. They were pressing intensely and restricted the game to India’s half for the majority of the second half. Sam Ward gave them a sliver of hope as he converted in the dying stages of the third quarter, with only seconds to go. The men in red were awarded three back-to-back penalty corners in the last stages of the quarter, and only converted the last one.

The last quarter also started with Great Britain on the front foot. But this time, India managed to break through and get into the opposition half more to grow back into the game. Hardik Singh scored a stunning solo goal following a rebound to net India’s third goal and end all hopes of going further for the British.

India will face Belgium in the semi-finals of the Olympics, and will be confident following their recent winning run.
