Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel is reportedly cancelled

Fans of Ubisoft’s action-adventure game Immortals Fenyx Rising may be unhappy to learn that a sequel has been cancelled. Immortals Fenyx Rising may not have been the smash hit that Ubisoft had hoped for, but it did provide a fun, action-packed adventure with obvious The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild inspiration. However, Ubisoft’s interests have altered in recent years, and games such as Assassin’s Creed have become more appealing options.

Immortals Fenyx Rising was initially unveiled at E3 2019, though it was formerly known as Gods and Monsters. It appeared to be greatly influenced by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at first, with a fanciful and inspirational tone. The game was renamed Immortals Fenyx Rising, delayed, and underwent extensive rewriting in 2020. As a result, the gameplay became more informal and action-oriented, with more humor and flashier combat. Many questioned whether it was a completely distinct game, which may have contributed to its lackluster popularity.

While Immortals Fenyx Rising was not an overnight success, many saw it as the first effort in what may be a growing franchise.

However, this does not appear to be the case any longer. According to VGC, many developers verified that a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising was in early development at Ubisoft. However, Ubisoft’s executives canceled the project in early June, citing “challenges around establishing the IP.”

Ubisoft said in January that it would refocus its development resources on its most important brands, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and, different Tom Clancy shooters. It confirmed three unannounced project cancellations, adding to four previous cancellations in mid-2022. A future for the Immortals Fenyx Rising franchise does not appear to be in Ubisoft’s plans as well.

Ubisoft has since unveiled some projects, including this fall’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage. There are currently eleven Assassin’s Creed games in development. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, a new Prince of Persia game, Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, and the recently released Star Wars Outlaws are all on the list. It’s simple to see why Immortals Fenyx Rising was deemed less important than the other high-profile initiatives.
