# IMAX: Which Premium Format Is Worth It URL: https://technosports.co.in/imax-which-format-india/ Published: 2026-09-04 Updated: 2026-09-04 Author: Raishya Das [IMAX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMAX) or 4DX — which premium cinema format is actually worth the extra ticket? IMAX Corporation has announced a deal to install more state-of-the-art laser projection systems in Indian multiplexes by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, 4DX keeps growing its motion-seat footprint. Industry reports (not officially confirmed figures) show PVR Inox runs the majority of both formats in Mumbai, [Delhi](https://technosports.co.in/who-is-ujwal-sharma-the-face-behind/), and Bengaluru. Here’s how the two experiences stack up. ## IMAX: Which Format Costs More In India? Both formats sit at the top of the pricing ladder, well above standard 2D screens in the same multiplex. **The premium you pay buys fundamentally different things: IMAX sells picture and sound, while 4DX sells physical sensation.** That distinction should drive your decision more than the price tag. ## What Does IMAX Actually Deliver On Screen? IMAX is built around scale. Christopher Nolan’s *Oppenheimer* set Indian box office records for IMAX ticket sales in July 2023. Proof that Indian audiences will pay for projected scale when the film demands it. Denis Villeneuve’s *Dune: Part Two* used expanded aspect ratios specifically optimised for IMAX auditoriums during its March 2024 run. Viewers saw materially more image than standard-screen audiences. **When a director shoots for the format, IMAX delivers footage you literally cannot see anywhere else.** The incoming laser projection systems should sharpen that advantage further across Indian multiplexes. ## How Does 4DX Change The Experience? CJ 4DPlex, the South Korean company behind the technology, partnered with Indian exhibition chains to introduce motion-synchronised seats featuring wind, water, and scent effects. ![](https://technosports.co.in/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Imax-2-1024x576.webp) Chairs tilt, vibrate, and punch in time with on-screen action. **It turns a film screening into something closer to a theme-park ride.** That is exhilarating — but it also means the format rewards the right film and punishes the wrong one. Think of it like [MS Dhoni’s Strategic Captaincy:](https://technosports.co.in/msdhoni-strategic-captaincy/) read the situation first, then commit. ## Which Films Perform Better In Each Format? The evidence points one way for event cinema. *Avatar: The Way of Water* grossed over ₹390 crore in India, making it one of the highest-earning Hollywood releases in both IMAX and 4DX formats. **Verdict: Avatar: The Way of Water’s ₹390 crore India gross proves premium formats thrive on spectacle-first event films.** Visual epics favou; kinetic action favours 4DX. A mid-budget drama gains little from either. Just as [Marcus Rashford delivers in](https://technosports.co.in/marcus-rashford-best-moments/) big matches rather than every fixture, premium formats earn their premium only on big-screen occasions. ## So Which One Should You Book? For most Indian moviegoers, IMAX is the safer spend. **Its benefits apply to nearly every well-shot film, while 4DX’s benefits apply to a narrow slice of them.** Pick 4DX when a blockbuster action title lands, and you want an outing with family or friends who value fun over fidelity. Pick IMAX for anything shot with large-format cameras. Think of it the way [Gabriel Martinelli does: 3 Turning](https://technosports.co.in/gabriel-martinelli-turning-points/) points reshaped a career — one well-timed choice changes everything. And just as [Gareth Bale and the](https://technosports.co.in/gareth-bale-four-turning-points/) biggest stages go together, event films and IMAX belong together. The bottom line: book for scale, 4DX for sensation, and let the film — not the format — make the final call. ## Related Articles - [Ram Charan Actor: From Telugu Cinema to Global Stardom](https://technosports.co.in/ram-charan-actor-from-telugu-cinema/) - [Singer Stardom Shifts: August Brand Rankings Reveal Top Vocalists](https://technosports.co.in/singer-stardom-shifts-august-brand/) - [Where Heritage Meets Stardom — Jagamae Sangeetham OTT Release Date, Plot, Cast,…](https://technosports.co.in/where-heritage-meets-stardom-jagamae-sangeetham-ott/) ## FAQs ### Is IMAX always better than 4DX in India? No. IMAX is the better all-round choice, but 4DX delivers a more thrilling experience for action-heavy blockbusters where motion and sensory effects add to the spectacle. ### **Do both formats cost the same in Indian multiplexes?** Pricing varies by city, showtime, and film, and both formats sit at the premium end of the ticket ladder compared with standard screens in the same property. ### **Which format should families with children choose?** Families tend to enjoy 4DX for animated and action titles because the moving seats and effects keep younger viewers engaged, though intense motion may not suit very young children.
