Ilkay Gundogan has announced his retirement from the German football team, after representing them at the 2024 Euros. The midfielder announced his departure having represented them for 13 years, making 82 appearances while scoring 19 goals.
The 33-year-old has been linked with an exit from Barcelona recently, and a sensational return to Manchester City could be on the cards.

“My highlight was definitely the huge honour of being able to lead the team as captain at our home European Championships last summer! After all these years, we finally managed to make the nation proud again ā Iām very happy that I was able to play a part in that.
“But even before the tournament, I felt a certain tiredness in my body and also in my head, which got me thinking. And the games at club and national level are not getting any less.
“Thanks to all the fans, staff, coaches and teammates who have accompanied me on this journey.
“It was an honor!
“Thank you, Germany!”
Gundogan also assured that he would be supporting the national team at the 2026 World Cup, and that he believed the team is capable of winning the trophy in the USA. It now remains to be seen if Manuel Neuer follows the midfielder, having opted to sit out of the September international break fixtures.
