One of the greatest goalkeepers of his era, Iker Casillas has officially announced his retirement on Tuesday. He suffered a heart attack during a training session with Porto in May 2019. He hasn’t played since then but was waiting for this season to end to announce his official retirement.
The Spanish legend wrote on social media: “The most important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination that it takes you.”
“I think I can say, without hesitation, that this has been the right path and the dream destination. Thanks.”

Iker Casillas had a glorious career, many could only dream of. He captained the Spanish side to the summit of world football, the World Cup in 2010. He has also guided them to two European Cups. He made 167 appearances for the national side.
Casillas is Real Madrid’s homegrown talent. He spent 25 years at the club starting from the youth level and ending as a club legend. He spent 16 seasons becoming the club’s all-time second-highest appearance holder with 725 caps. He won 19 titles with Madrid including 5 LaLiga and 3 Champions League titles.
He joined Porto in the summer of 2015. The image of Casillas crying in the press conference as he was on his way out of Real Madrid still hurt all the Madridistas. But he had a successful time at Porto as well, winning 2 Liga NOS and 1 Super Cup.
⛔ Paradas. Muchas paradas.

Iker Casillas has announced his retirement on 4th August and he will be coming back to his home, Real Madrid. Florentino Perez seems to have sorted out everything with the club legend and want him beside his side.
According to a report by Marca, the 39-year-old will be working closely with Florentino Perez as an adviser in a position that will be further defined in the coming weeks. The important thing is that Florentino wants to keep Casillas close, and Iker has agreed to the proposal. It will be similar to the role played by Zinedine Zidane in his day.
Casillas is like an asset for Real Madrid. He is a born Madridista and a public figure at Madrid. He has all the ability to lead the club forward so Perez wants to include him in his management team.
The legendary Real Madrid goalkeeper will now finally come back to his home. He will take his place in the Los Blancos’ hierarchy before the 2020-21 season goes underway.
