Head coach of the Indian Football Team, Igor Stimac, is emphasizing the critical need to permit Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to join the national squad, particularly in the aftermath of the unsatisfactory performance at the AFC Asian Cup 2023.

Igor Stimac Urges Inclusion of Indian-Origin Players from European Leagues
Stimac contends that India should contemplate the inclusion of players with Indian roots, pointing out the abundance of talented individuals currently engaged in prominent European leagues. According to him, their participation could yield substantial advantages for Indian football.
In expressing his perspective, Stimac noted, “I’m not sure if there is any other country which is not allowing players of their origin to represent their country.” He elaborated on the significant handicap faced by the Indian team, given the presence of many skilled players of Indian origin in the top European leagues. Stimac believes that their incorporation could be instrumental in achieving greater success on the international stage.
“It is a huge handicap because there are many good players of Indian origin playing in the top leagues of Europe. So it could be a huge help if we speak about bigger achievements.“
AIFF Task Force Explores Options for Players with Indian Roots
Since 2008, prevailing regulations have imposed restrictions on Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) from representing India on the international stage. The Constitution of India and the Citizenship Act of 1955, with a stance against dual citizenship, mandate OCI and PIO cardholders to relinquish their foreign passports and fulfill a residency requirement of at least 12 months for eligibility to apply for an Indian passport.
This legal constraint presents a challenging scenario for footballers with Indian roots, compelling them to make a decision regarding the national team they wish to represent. Igor Stimac’s proposal to reconsider this policy holds the potential to unlock avenues for players such as Yan Dhanda (Ross County, Scotland), Joshua Pynadath (Jong AZ, Netherlands), and Dilan Markanday (Blackburn Rovers, England) to explore the possibility of playing for India.
Recognizing the intricacies of this issue, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has taken proactive steps to explore solutions. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey established a task force in the previous year to identify and compile a comprehensive database of potential players of Indian origin worldwide. Led by Samir Thapar, the president of the Punjab Football Association, this task force is on track to submit its findings by the end of the month.
This initiative showcases the AIFF’s commitment to harnessing the diverse talent pool of players with Indian heritage and signifies a proactive approach to address the existing challenges in player representation.
India Faces Uphill Battle for AFC Asian Cup 2023 Knockout Qualification
Despite a valiant effort from the Indian men’s national team, their resilience was overshadowed by a 0-3 defeat to Uzbekistan in the Round 2 of Group B at the AFC Asian Cup 2023 on Thursday, January 18. The Blue Tigers, led by Sunil Chhetri, found themselves trailing by three goals at the conclusion of the first half, unable to recover from a challenging start. This setback follows their previous loss to Australia in the tournament opener.
As Group B progresses after the Round 2 fixtures, Australia asserts its dominance by leading with six points from two matches. Uzbekistan, with a draw against Syria and a victory over India, secures the second spot in the group standings. Meanwhile, Syria holds just one point, and India is yet to register any points.
Looking ahead to the final round of fixtures, Australia and Uzbekistan will clash, while Syria faces off against India. The top two teams in each group, along with the four best-ranked third-placed teams, will advance to the round of 16. Conversely, the bottom teams and the two worst-ranked third-placed teams in each group will be eliminated from the tournament.
The critical question arises: Can India still qualify for the knockout stages of the AFC Asian Cup 2023?
Securing victory against Syria is imperative for India if they are to keep their hopes alive for advancing to the knockout stages of the AFC Asian Cup 2023. Under the leadership of Igor Stimac, the Indian team faces the challenge of finishing no higher than the third spot in their group. Consequently, their only pathway to qualification is through securing one of the four best-ranked third-placed positions.
In Group A, where Tajikistan, Lebanon, and China have one or two points each, India relies on either Tajikistan and Lebanon drawing in their final match or China being defeated by hosts Qatar. This scenario would leave the eventual third-placed team in the group with fewer points than India, provided the Blue Tigers secure a win against Syria.
Group C presents a situation where Palestine has one point and Hong Kong is yet to score. For India, a draw in this group would be the ideal outcome.
Group D poses a significant challenge, as both the second and third-placed teams have three points each. Overcoming them on goal difference will be a daunting task for Stimac’s men, who have conceded five goals without reply in the tournament.
The outcome in Group E becomes largely inconsequential for India, with Bahrain securing three points against Malaysia and the teams here boasting a superior goal difference.
In Group F, where Thailand and Saudi Arabia currently have three points each, India would hope for these teams to gain points against the bottom-placed sides, and then for Oman and Kyrgyz Republic to play to a draw in their Round 3 clash.
While the task is challenging, it is not impossible for India to secure a spot in the knockout stages. They need to outperform two of the third-placed teams, either in terms of points or goal difference, to realize their aspiration of progressing further in the tournament.
