Just a couple of weeks after Apple unveiled the newly redesigned M4 Mac mini, iFixit performed one of the first teardowns to identify some major internal changes. iFixit, which is famous for its exhaustive Apple product tear-downs actually rates devices on how easy they are to fix. For this super small form factor, the M4 Mac mini has existed at a significant scale as a computing device at 5 inches by 5 inches and its internal interconnected components have grown increasingly compact and probably less serviceable.

iFixit Gives Redesigned M4 Mac mini 7/10 Repairability Score, Highlights Modularity and Easy Repairs
In addition to the improved external chassis design, this includes improvements also to the internal thermal design compared with the previous model which allowed for greater internal space. As noted in the teardown, the ‘power supply module’ is located more at the top of the device, exactly like with HomePod. This design, which saves space, could shrink the M4 Mac mini down even more without sacrificing efficiency. A central fan pulls air in to cool the device, with hot air venting through the bottom.
To support the cooling requirements of the M4 Pro variant, Apple is using a new thermal solution. There’s a more expansive copper heatsink that has been tacked onto it. This is an atypical thermal solution compared to previous Apple products, as the larger heatsink is necessary for the higher-powered Mac mini configuration.
One standout feature of the M4 Mac mini is its modular SSD, which allows users to upgrade the storage themselves. However, Apple uses proprietary SSDs, similar to those found in the Mac Studio, and the M4 and M4 Pro models feature different types of NAND modules that are not interchangeable. RAM, however, is soldered onto the M4 chip, making upgrades impossible after purchase. Users need to choose the right configuration when buying. iFixit rated the latest Mac mini a 7 out of 10 for repairability, a relatively high score for Apple devices, due to its modular SSD, easily removable components, and accessible repair guides.
