Giorginio Wijnaldum is slowly drifting away from Barcelona and they will be desperate to look for other options soon. The Liverpool midfielder is reported to have chosen French side PSG on a free transfer move from the Reds. Barcelona is having one of the worst financial years in the history of the club and would be looking to reinforcing their midfield without hurting their pockets much. Here are some potential options Barca could pursue.

If Wijnaldum is off the table, which midfielder does Barcelona sign?

Hakan Calhanoglu (AC Milan)

The Turkish talent needs no introduction. He is just 27, his contract with AC Milan has come to an end and he has proven his worth in Serie A. If he were to agree, Barcelona could bank on his offensive and dead-ball capabilities. Victor Font had already shown interest in Calhanoglu during his run for the presidency. Had he defeated Joan Laporta, Calhanoglu would probably be on a flight to Spain right now.

Fernandinho (Manchester City)

Barcelona needs experienced heads to lead them. Barcelona needs structure and who better to fit the role than the 36-years old Man City player. His age is surely a concern but he has had a great season with City. Fernandinho’s contract also ends this summer and a move to the Catalan side would mean relieving a burden off Sergio Busquets.

Franco Vázquez (Sevilla)

Probably the least likely name on the list, but the Argentinian’s contract at Sevilla is ending and Sevilla shows no sign to renew him. The 32-years old looks towards spending more time in Europe and a free transfer to Barcelona wouldn’t be off the table.
