There’s a documentary coming to Netflix this Fall 2026 that is equal parts royal, raw, and deeply personal — and honestly, it might be one of the most quietly powerful things the streaming giant has put out in years.

**The King, His Trust and Me** features the recently knighted **Sir Idris Elba**, **His Majesty King Charles III**, and shines a spotlight on **The King’s Trust** — a charity celebrating its **50th anniversary in 2026**. But what makes this more than just another royal documentary is the story at its heart. ### The £1,500 Grant That Changed Everything

First launched in 1976, The King’s Trust (formerly the Prince’s Trust) is a charity founded by King Charles III that supports vulnerable young people aged 11 to 30, helping those facing difficulties including education, homelessness, unemployment, disabilities, and the law.

Here’s where it gets personal. At the age of 18, Sir Idris received a £1,500 grant to study at the National Youth Music Theatre — an opportunity he credits with launching his entire career. Without that grant, there may have been no *Luther*, no *The Wire*, no global superstar. That’s not a small thing.

Other famous beneficiaries of the Trust include **David Oyelowo**, **Muse**, **Dynamo (Steve Frayne)**, and **DJ Naughty Boy** — proof that this charity has quietly shaped British culture for decades.

### A BAFTA Winner Behind the Camera

Directing duties fall to **Ashley Francis-Roy**, the BAFTA Award-winning filmmaker behind *To Catch a Copper*, who has also helmed documentaries such as *The Greatest Show Never Made* and *Max Clifford: The Fall of a Tabloid King*. With a storyteller of this calibre at the helm, expect something emotionally textured — not a glossy PR exercise.

The documentary is produced by Sir Idris’s own production company, **22 Summers**, which he co-founded with Diene Petterle. [whats-on-netflix](https://www.whats-on-netflix.com/news/the-king-his-trust-and-me-wt-sir-idris-elba-king-charles-iii-documentary-is-coming-to-netflix-in-fall-2026/)
