This is the first-ever win for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka in an ICC World Cup match, with the Lions leading the head to head record 3-0 before the game.

The partnership between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan proved to be the game changer for Bangladesh. Shanto narrowly missed out on his century by 10 runs, while Al Hasan was caught out for 82.

Angelo Mathews was timed out, a historic event in international cricket and went on to dismiss Shakib Al Hasan and point towards his wrist to call back to the earlier incident. Even though he requested the Bangladesh captain to withdraw his request, Al Hasan insisted that his counterpart be sent back.

Charith Assalanka scored 108 runs to help Sri Lanka put up a total of 279 before eventually being bowled out with three balls to spare. He was aided by Pathum Nissanka’s 41 runs and Dhananjaya de Silva, who scored 34 runs in 36 deliveries.

Bangladesh’s bowling attack saw Tanzim Hasan Sakib shine with 3/80 in 10 overs, while Al Hasan took 2 for 57 in 10 overs. Shoriful Islam took two wickets for 51 runs as he bowled the final over of the first innings.

Madushanka led the bowling figures with three wickets for 69 runs in 10 overs while captain Angelo Mathews took the vital wickets of both Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan to deny them a century each. The strong partnership for the third wicket proved to be the game changer for Bangladesh, who clawed their way to the target in due course.
