Ian Maatsen to join Aston Villa for £37.5 million from Chelsea

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign Ian Maatsen on a permanent deal by meeting their valuation of £37.5 million.

The left-back spent the latter half of the 23/24 season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, earning a lot of praise for his performances, and helping the team reach the Champions League finals. However, they were unable to defeat Real Madrid at Wembley Stadium on the big occasion, and had to settle for the runners-up medals.

Dortmund were exploring options to bring him back on a permanent deal, but were unwilling to pay Chelsea’s asking price. As a result, Villa have pounced on the opportunity and have secured themselves a top player to bolster their defence and attack.

Maatsen is currently representing the Netherlands national team at Euro 2024, and has been given permission to carry out the medical tests needed for the transfer with the nation team camp. An agreement with the player is also expected soon, which would complete all the required details for the move.

The Cobham academy graduate spent the first half of last season making sporadic appearances under Mauricio Pochettino, which prompted a move away on loan. And with Chelsea needing pure profit from their academy graduates, the move for Maatsen has been sanctioned.

But this might not be the last deal carried out between the two clubs, as talks are ongoing for Jhon Duran and Omari Kellyman to make the move to London as part of a separate deal. Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £19 million deal for Kellyman, and are hoping to wrap up the transfer with a swift agreement on personal terms.

How old is Ian Maatsen?
