In one of gaming’s most dramatic comebacks, Hytale has been reacquired from Riot Games by founder Simon Collins-Laflamme, and just 24 hours later, the once-cancelled Minecraft competitor delivered what fans have craved for years: actual gameplay footage. “Breaking the Curse” – What the Footage Reveals

The 16-minute video features barely edited live footage recorded in a single morning, running on the game’s legacy engine from 2018 on a four-year-old build. Collins-Laflamme emphasized releasing raw footage to “break the curse once and for all.”

Combat & Gameplay Mechanics

The trailer showcased combat mechanics including weapons like shortbow, axe, dual daggers, and shields, along with intense gameplay fighting hordes of unique hostile mobs. The combat looks significantly faster and more complex than Minecraft, with players swapping between weapon types featuring distinct movement styles, combat rolling, and switching between first and third-person perspectives.

World Building & Exploration

Footage highlights diverse environments from open fields to dark, misty forests teeming with monstrous enemies. The title draws inspiration from Minecraft’s iconic block-shaped world while blending an array of features that bolster its status as a much-awaited RPG.

The trailer also showcases Hytale’s creation tools, allowing players to customize their experience by creating new assets or adding existing ones—though Collins-Laflamme confirmed the game will no longer launch with Hypixel server-style minigames.

The Technical Decision That Saved Hytale

Two engines were in development: the Legacy Engine (C#/Java PC-only) from 3-4 years ago, and a Cross-platform Engine (C++) in development for three years. The critical choice? Abandon the cross-platform engine.

The Cross-platform Engine would require two years before early access consideration, while the Legacy Engine is playable now. Collins-Laflamme made the pragmatic call to ship a game rather than continue building an engine, with plans to make it cross-platform later.

The Team Behind the Resurrection

Over 30 former developers who previously worked on Hytale have been rehired—people who know the codebase and chose to return for the project’s revival. The core leadership includes:

  • Simon Collins-Laflamme (Co-founder) – Vision and community leadership
  • Philippe Touchette (Co-founder) – Financial oversight
  • Kevin Carstens (Technical Lead) – Leading all technical development
  • Patrick Derbic (Management Lead) – Studio operations

Collins-Laflamme reportedly put down $25 million of his own money to resurrect the project, though the final acquisition price remains undisclosed.

What to Expect from Early Access

The team is transparent about what’s coming: “Expect bugs, rough edges, unbalanced content, and frequent updates that break things,” starting over with a 4-year-old build.

At Launch:

  • Modding support available immediately
  • Private server hosting
  • Custom content creation tools
  • Focus on core adventure mode

Not at Launch:

  • Hypixel-style minigames (moved to post-launch)
  • Cross-platform support (coming later)
  • Polished AAA experience

The studio commits to 10 years of support and promises to deliver a release date “in the coming days.”

Community Reaction: “More Footage in 48 Hours Than Five Years”

One YouTube comment stated “it’s funny how Simon has released more footage in 48 hours than in the last five years”, perfectly capturing the community’s relief and excitement. The comment section overflowed with praise for Collins-Laflamme’s transparency and decisive action.

One excited commenter wrote “This is the moment we’ve waited for…” while another joked “Simon be like, ‘guys it’s not that good yet, trust’ and then drops this BANGER!”

The Road Ahead

Collins-Laflamme stated “I promised players videos, screenshots and blog posts. One day after the acquisition, I’m keeping that promise”, heading back to work on early access launch with plans to share more clips and screenshots as development accelerates.

In a market dominated by Minecraft for over a decade, Hytale’s resurrection offers hope for innovation in the sandbox RPG space. Whether it can deliver on a decade’s worth of anticipation remains to be seen, but for the first time since 2018, that possibility feels real.

FAQs

Q: When will Hytale early access be available?

While an exact date hasn’t been announced, the development team promises to reveal the early access release date “in the coming days.” The game is currently running on its legacy engine from 2018 on a four-year-old build, which is playable now. Collins-Laflamme has committed to getting early access out as soon as possible, making this the most concrete timeline Hytale has ever had.

Q: What happened to Hytale and why was it cancelled by Riot Games?

Riot Games acquired Hytale developer Hypixel Studios in 2020, but after seven years of development featuring scope creep and an ill-advised engine rewrite, Riot cancelled the project in June 2025. Original co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme then purchased the rights back from Riot in November 2025, rehired over 30 former developers, and made the strategic decision to abandon the in-development cross-platform engine in favor of the older but functional legacy engine to accelerate the path to early access.
