Forget dragons and rings — Hugo Weaving’s next stop is a chaotic international airport terminal, and honestly, it might be his most human role yet.

Netflix has grabbed worldwide rights (outside Australia) to *The Airport Chaplain*, an SBS Original that’s about to land on screens everywhere this August. If you love slice-of-life dramas with heart, chaos, and a stacked cast, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.

### What’s the story about?

Set entirely within the limbo of a busy airport, the show follows Tobias Wallace — a scruffy, rule-bending chaplain in a hi-vis vest who believes the terminal simply cannot run without him. Enter Mira, the sharp new terminal manager who sees him as a liability, not a lifesaver. What unfolds is equal parts comedy, grief, and redemption. Bonus: it’s based on a real Melbourne Airport chaplain who once helped reunite someone with a lost handbag.

### Why it’s worth watching

Hugo Weaving, best known globally for *The Lord of the Rings*, has spent recent years building a reputation for nuanced, understated performances — a career arc well documented on [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Weaving). This role continues that streak, trading blockbuster spectacle for grounded, emotionally rich storytelling.

Netflix releasing it day-and-date with the Australian broadcast is also a big deal — it signals growing confidence in SBS content reaching a global audience, something binge-watchers should keep an eye on as more international dramas make the jump to mainstream streaming.
