Huawei was one of the three smartphone manufacturing companies who ship smartphones with its own chips and it’s HiSilicon Kirin SoCs accounting for 70% to 80%. However, as the US trade ban for Huawei extends till May 2021, the situation has changed completely.
Also, this means Huawei will be unable to order new wafers from its primary chip supplier TSMC although they have reserved 5 nm nodes from TSMC for its upcoming Kirin 1020. But for its other smartphones, Huawei needs other alternatives which bring up the name of MediaTek who has been its partner for quite some time now.
But this time, Huawei will be using MediaTek’s premium 7 nm based 5G chipsets like Dimensity 1000, Dimensity 800 as well. Previously, Huawei used MediaTek lower-end 4G chips in its low and mid-range smartphones.
According to the latest reports by mydrivers, Huawei’s orders for the MediaTek chips have increased by a whopping 300% this year while the Taiwanese Silicon manufacturer is evaluating whether they have sufficient resources to meet Huawei’s demands.
This will be a significant chance for MediaTek to supply a huge amount of SoCs in Huawei’s smartphones which can be a game-changing move against its sole rival Qualcomm. Also, this report is quite justified of the fact that Huawei recently announced its new Enjoy Z 5G smartphone with MediaTek Dimensity 800.
