Huawei’s general license with Google has just expired, will older smartphone receive updates?

The Chinese smartphone giant has faced a lot of problems with its trade with the US companies including Google, the maker of Android. Its US partners had got a temporary license that helped them to cooperate and have trade relations and was extended on several occasions, however, yesterday the license has also expired.

What it means is that any of the smartphone which has been manufactured before May 16 2019 will be eligible to receive updates (both security & general) from Google. But however, if there’s any compatibility issues with Huawei and the Google apps during a software update, both of the companies will not be able to work together to resolve any issue for providing the updates issued by Google.

Also, Huawei will not be able to distribute Google apps with future updates not only for new devices but also for ones older than May 16 2019 because Google has to certify every update individually what Huawei is pushing. Now, with the US trade ban along with the expired license, Google won’t be able to work with Huawei, leaving a huge number of Huawei/ Honor devices in jeopardy.

Even if older devices get Google’s support somehow but however, with no renewed license with Huawei means a complete cut off on the software front for all those devices running on Android. So, obviously if you own an old Huawei/ Honor device there are high chances of no software or security updates from Google as there’s no speculations surrounding the renewal of the license.
