Each of the **[2026 World Cup](https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/worldcup/canadamexicousa2026)** co-hosts had their moments in their opening matches. **Mexico** opened the tournament with a **2-0 win over South Africa**. An injury-plagued **Canada** produced a positive performance in a **1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina**. But the **United States’** three-goal first half and **4-1 win over Paraguay** on Friday night was on another level entirely.

Whether it was their best half ever at a **World Cup**, as was claimed on US television, is debatable. What is not debatable is that from back to front, it was the performance of the tournament so far. Here are the five numbers that explain how **Mauricio Pochettino’s** side made it happen.

## 84 — Chris Richards’ Perfect Passing Record

Much of the attention will focus on how the **United States** linked up in the attacking third. But accurate and ambitious passing from the back was central to setting everything up.

The main questions about this team before the tournament concerned the defensive unit. **Tim Ream** is **38 years old**. **Chris Richards** had been carrying an injury. **Tyler Adams**, just in front of them in defensive midfield, has frequently been injured since many US fans last watched him during **Qatar 2022**.

![USA](https://images.technosports.co.in/2026/06/Chris-Richards-passes-vs-Paraguay-World-Cup-2026-1024x768.jpg)

Against Paraguay, with the **USA** dominating possession, the concern was less about being exposed defensively and more about whether those players could support an attack effectively. They did it very well indeed.

| USA Back Three — First-Half Passing | Player | Passes Completed | Passes Attempted |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tim Ream | 55 | 58 | |
| Chris Richards | 52 | 52 | |
| Tyler Adams | 30 | 30 | |
| **Combined** | **137** | **140** | |

**Richards** was particularly outstanding. He went on to retain his perfect passing mark through the second half, finishing the match with **84 passes completed from 84 attempted** — a **100% pass accuracy rate** across the full game. That is the **most passes with a 100% accuracy rate by any player in a World Cup match on record, dating back to 1966**.

And it was not all safe, sideways passing. The Crystal Palace defender pushed the team forward, actively contributing to attack. He had the most touches in the entire match after Ream, and his involvement in build-up was as progressive as it was precise.

## 23 — Tim Ream’s Line-Breaking Passes

Part of the reason **Tim Ream** is not just in this squad but starting and captaining the side is his distribution quality — and if Friday was any indication, that may be the last skill to leave him.

Ream attempted **91 passes** across the match — **20 of which** ended in the final third — and he was ambitious throughout, completing **16 of those 20**. Most strikingly, he recorded **23 line-breaking passes** — at least **eight more than any other player at the tournament so far**.

![](https://images.technosports.co.in/2026/06/Tim-Ream-line-breaking-passes-vs-Paraguay-1024x768.jpg)

That figure also stands up in wider historical context:

| Context for Ream’s 23 Line-Breaking Passes | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Most line-breaking passes by a defender at the 2026 World Cup | Yes |
| Most by a defender in a World Cup match since | John Pantsil (Ghana vs USA, 2010) — and that game went to extra time |
| USA’s total line-breaking passes vs Paraguay | 76 (most by any team at the 2026 World Cup so far) |
| Line-breaking passes that broke the Paraguay defensive line specifically | 15 (only team in double figures at the tournament) |

The **USA’s** total of **76 line-breaking passes** was the most by any team at the **2026 World Cup** through four games — with **Canada** second (70 against Bosnia-Herzegovina). Crucially, **15 of those broke through the Paraguay defensive line specifically** — the only team in the tournament so far to reach double figures in that category. **Canada (9)** and **Mexico (6)** were the only other sides to manage more than five.

## 76.5% — Passing Accuracy in the Attacking Third

The attacking unit did not waste the platform the backline created. They went forward with relentlessness and volume, completing **76.5% (78 from 102) of their passes in the final third in the first half alone**.

No other team at the **2026 World Cup** has completed more than **50 such passes** in the first half of a single game. The **USA** finished 78.

It is worth noting these are not entirely unprecedented numbers for this team. In their **2022 win over Iran**, they completed **88 of 112 first-half passes ending in the final third (78.6%)**. The critical difference on Friday was that they finished their moves.

### Where the Danger Came From

The **first goal** — an own goal — developed through a sharp carry from **Weston McKennie** through midfield to find **Christian Pulisic**, who worked his way through the Paraguay defence to play a ball that **Damián Bobadilla** turned into his own net in just the **seventh minute**.

**Pulisic** then set up **Folarin Balogun** in the **31st minute** to make it **2-0**. After that, the attack broadened significantly — **Alex Freeman** and **Sergiño Dest** getting actively involved down the right.

![](https://images.technosports.co.in/2026/06/United-States-Attacking-Thirds-vs-Paraguay-1024x768.jpg)

One of the pre-match questions was how the right side would function with Dest in a more advanced position and **21-year-old Freeman** playing behind him. In practice, the combination was fluid and effective — Freeman finished with the most touches in the entire match after Ream.

In central midfield, both **McKennie** and **Malik Tillman** created a match-high **three chances each**. There was simply no area where things were not flowing for the **USA**.

## 16 — High Turnovers Nearly Trebling the Next Best

In typical **Pochettino** style, the **USA** were not content to dominate with the ball. They also pressed high and with intensity when out of possession.

Their **16 high turnovers** in the match almost **trebled the next-best** at the tournament so far — **Czechia and Bosnia-Herzegovina** each managed **six** in their respective opening fixtures.

| High Turnover Stats — 2026 World Cup So Far | Figure |
| --- | --- |
| USA high turnovers vs Paraguay | 16 |
| Next best (Czechia, Bosnia-Herzegovina) | 6 each |
| USA high turnovers leading to shots | 3 |
| Total shots from high turnovers by all other teams combined | 3 or fewer |

Three **USA** high turnovers resulted in shots — more than all other teams at the tournament so far **combined** in that category.

The pressing numbers are even more striking when contextualised against possession. The **USA** applied **more total pressures (530) than any other team at the World Cup so far** — and did so while holding **65.3% of the ball**, a greater share of possession than any other team has had at this tournament. When they gave the ball away, they worked relentlessly to get it back.

## 4 — Goals in a Single World Cup Match for the First Time in History

To understand the significance of what the **United States** achieved on Friday night, some historical context is necessary.

Prior to this match, the **USA** had **never scored four goals in a single World Cup game**. They had scored **three goals in total** at **Qatar 2022** — across their entire group stage campaign. In the first half against Paraguay, they matched their entire **2022** output in **45 minutes**.

| USA World Cup Goal Context | Stat |
| --- | --- |
| Goals in a single World Cup match (prior to this) | Never more than 3 |
| Goals scored in their entire 2022 World Cup campaign | 3 |
| Goals scored in first half vs Paraguay | 3 |
| Total goals vs Paraguay | 4 |
| Only World Cups where USA scored more than 4 goals total | 4 other editions |

**Folarin Balogun** was the centrepiece. He became only the **second United States player to score multiple goals in a World Cup match** — after **Bert Patenaude’s hat-trick against Paraguay in 1930**. That, too, came against Paraguay. Balogun achieved it in his **first ever World Cup match**, and did so in the **first 45 minutes**.

![](https://images.technosports.co.in/2026/06/USA-most-goals-scored-in-World-Cups.jpg)

The pre-tournament debate about whether **Balogun** or **Ricardo Pepi** was the right choice up top now has a clear, immediate answer. **Balogun** scored **19 goals across all competitions in France last season** — slightly under his **20.3 xG** — while **Pepi** had been prolific at PSV with a league goal every **75 minutes** while outperforming finishing expectations.

Nobody was raising that debate when Balogun bent his second goal into the top-left corner.

He will be back up top when the **USA** face **Australia** in Seattle next Friday — a match in which they will be looking to punch their ticket to the last 32 with a game to spare.
