In one of the most essential matches of the La Liga season, Sevilla managed to get the better of Atletico Madrid in their match played yesterday with the lower placed team winning 1-0. A title race that seemingly belonged to Atletico Madrid this season has been blown wide open due to the defeat to Sevilla.
Moreover, their performances since the turn of the year have been somewhat lacklustre in comparison to the side of Diego Simeone’s men that we saw in the latter half of 2020.
Marcos Acuna headed home a slick cross from club captain Jesus Navas at the 70-minute mark to score the only goal of the game. That proved to be the difference between the two teams at the end of the game.
With El Clasico next week, the title race is between all four of the highest placed clubs in the division which involves Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Sevilla. The Rojiblancos find themselves with 66 points from 29 games, while their city Rivals, Real, have 63 points from the same number of games played.
Barcelona have the chance to decrease the separation to one point tonight when they take on Real Valladolid. However, a decisive result in the Clasico will potentially drive either club out of the race, with Barcelona heading into the game with a slight advantage.
Los Blancos won the first Clasico of the season at Camp Nou, and will be trying their best to repeat the feat while Barcelona will be determined to not let the spoils of last time out get to them.
