How Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival has been detrimental for Manchester United’s identity as a team

The hype surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United is not dying anytime soon. However, their defeat to BSC Young Boys in their opening match of the Champions League was surely not the outcome that fans and players of the club had hoped for.

With the inclusion of a player like Ronaldo in the team, the media and fans are quickly starting to forget that football is a team sport. Ronaldo’s teammates are now starting to look like assistants in his quest to be the greatest of all time, instead of being a team and trying to be a cohesive unit.

Gary Neville of Sky Sports has also commented on the fact that Manchester United might have been better suited to recruit a player like Harry Kane instead of Ronaldo. He does maintain his idea of Ronaldo as the greatest player of all time, though. Ronaldo has also established himself as a key contender for the Premier League Golden Boot this season.

The manner in which Manchester United conceded their second goal was difficult to digest. A stray pass by Lingard led to David De Gea being stranded and scored past, in the final seconds of the game. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off early in the game, and he has been depicted as a liability for the team as well.

Solskjær took off Ronaldo despite the team being in need of a goal, and the coach’s actions might just show a hint of agreement with the ideas of Gary Neville.
