Germany were given a lifeline in Group E after Costa Rica defeated Japan in a shocking result. The 2014 World Cup champions lost their second opening game in consecutive editions, with their most recent loss coming against Japan.

The draw against Spain wasn’t the ideal result – as a win would have obviously been better. But, it gives them a chance to qualify from the bottom of the group on the final day of group stage games.

If Hansi Flick’s side is to make it to the last 16, they will have to beat Costa Rica in their third group stage game. Moreover, they also need Japan to not gain any points from their game against Spain. Which means La Roja must win in their last group game, and not draw.

Costa Rica are not to be underestimated, though. Despite being battered 7-0 by Spain, they were able to beat Japan. And Germany will have to show their desire to win in order to get three essential points.

Otherwise, they risk being eliminated in the group stage for the second straight World Cup. They have won only one World Cup game since their 2014 title, and will have to find their second win to stay in contention for the last 16 this year.
