Honor Exits Indian Smartphone Market After Struggles with Competition and Operational Challenges

Honor’s initial entry into India was marked by its association with Huawei, its parent company. However, the U.S. government’s block on Huawei placed some heavy restrictions on our operations, the most complaining one is losing access to Google Mobile Services.

Later, after separating from Huawei to become an independent entity, Honor had to contend with regaining consumer confidence and market share, too. In 2023, Honor, another sub-brand of Huawei, tried to re-enter the Indian market by taking advantage of local manufacturing and partnerships.

But the brand was facing stiff competition from the likes of Xiaomi, Samsung, and realme, which have massive market presence, aggressive pricing, huge distribution, and strong brand loyalty. Some marketing missteps also contributed to Honor’s troubles. High dependence on telcos to promote the brand and limited marketing hampered visibility among the target audience. In addition, Honor products failed to keep up with rapidly changing consumer tastes, in particular, fast-evolving 5G technology and camera features, and product-wise, were too slow to react.

The COVID-19 pandemic also disrupted Honor’s supply chain and postponed its new product launches, and weakened Honor’s capacity for good competition. Not even its attempt to pivot its strategy to the new market realities could save Honor from mounting troubles. While Honor has ceased its operations in India, however, Honor says it will maintain after-sales service for existing customers and the company’s existing portfolio with its current lineup of smartphones will continue to be available.

This will be the end of an eventful journey for Honor in the Indian smartphone space and underlines the challenges a newcomer brand faces in a competitive, fast-changing consumer market.
