Hockey India League Returns After 7-Year Hiatus: All You Need to Know

After a seven-year gap, the Hockey India League (HIL) is making a much-anticipated comeback. This revival brings excitement for both fans and players, marking a new chapter in Indian hockey.

With the league set to kick off in December, the 2024-25 edition promises to be bigger and better than ever, featuring both men’s and women’s teams for the first time.

A New Era for the Hockey India League

The upcoming edition of the Hockey India League, slated to begin on December 28, will host matches in Rourkela and Ranchi, two key venues in Indian hockey. The competition will see eight men’s teams and six women’s teams vying for the title, marking a significant expansion from the previous five editions, which only included men’s teams. The opening ceremony will take place in Rourkela, coinciding with the first game of the tournament.

The league’s return is a major development, particularly for women’s hockey, which will be featured for the first time in HIL’s history. The addition of women’s teams aims to elevate the standard of the national women’s side and provide them with the same international exposure that has benefited their male counterparts in previous years.

Participating Teams and Franchise Owners

The HIL 2024-25 will see teams representing cities from across the country. Here’s a breakdown of the franchises and their owners:

Men’s Teams:

  • Chennai (Charles Group)
  • Lucknow (Yadu Sports)
  • Delhi (SG Sports and Entertainment)
  • Kolkata (Shrachi Group)
  • Odisha (Vedanta)
  • Hyderabad (Resolute Sports)
  • Ranchi (Navoyam Sports Ventures)
  • Punjab (JSW Sports)

Women’s Teams:

  • Delhi (SG Sports)
  • Kolkata (Shrachi Group)
  • Odisha (Novayan)
  • Haryana (JSW Sports)
  • Two more teams yet to be confirmed

The franchises will have the chance to build strong squads through a player auction, scheduled for October 13-15 in New Delhi.

Player Auction: Rules and Categories

The auction process will see players from both domestic and international levels register in three categories, with base prices of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 5 lakh, and Rs 10 lakh. While the bidding starts at the base price, there is no upper limit, leaving room for franchises to compete fiercely for the best talent available.

Each franchise will be required to form a 24-player squad, which must include at least 16 Indian players, with a mandatory inclusion of four junior players. The rest of the squad will consist of eight international stars. Although the list of registered players for the auction hasn’t been revealed yet, reports suggest that some of the top players in the world have expressed their interest in participating in the league.

Venues and Schedule

The league will be played across two prominent venues:

  • Ranchi will host all of the women’s matches at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium.
  • Rourkela will be the venue for all men’s matches at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium.

The finals are set for January 26, 2025 (women’s league) and February 1, 2025 (men’s league). These dates not only align with India’s national celebrations but also signify a grand finale to a month-long tournament.

The Significance of HIL’s Revival

The return of the Hockey India League is crucial for several reasons. Historically, HIL played a pivotal role in transforming Indian men’s hockey. The previous editions helped nurture local talent by providing a platform where Indian players could compete with and learn from international stars. This exposure contributed to the men’s team winning medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics, marking significant milestones in Indian hockey.

Now, with the inclusion of women’s teams, the league is expected to offer similar opportunities to female players. The Indian women’s team coach, Harender Singh, sees this as a game-changer. “HIL will give our girls the chance to rub shoulders with the best players in the world, both on and off the field. It will boost their confidence and help them prepare better at an individual level,” he said. Singh highlighted how the experience from competing at such a high level could help elevate the women’s team to new heights, much like it did for the men’s team.

Future Editions and Broadcast

Hockey India has confirmed that the Federation of International Hockey (FIH) has set aside a window from late January to early February for the HIL for the next decade. This move ensures that the league will become an annual feature, fostering consistent growth in Indian hockey.

As for the broadcast rights, official details are yet to be announced. However, based on the previous editions, it is likely that the matches will be telecasted on Star Sports, ensuring widespread coverage and accessibility for hockey fans across the country.

The revival of the Hockey India League promises to be a thrilling chapter in Indian sports. With top-class international and domestic talent set to battle it out on the field, both men’s and women’s hockey will gain invaluable experience. The league not only serves as a platform to showcase the best in the sport but also paves the way for the growth of future stars. As the countdown begins to December 28, hockey fans can expect an exhilarating tournament that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Indian hockey.
