Hector Herrera has reached an agreement with MLS side Houston Dynamos to join them as a Designated Player in the summer. The midfielder will be making the switch as a free agent since his contract with Atletico Madrid expires in the summer.

The player has agreed to a deal until 2024, with the option to extend further until 2025. The Mexican international has agreed to join the Dynamos, with the city having close ties to Mexico as well. This is a further positive for the move, funded by new owner Ted Segal.

“On behalf of the City of Houston and our loyal, passionate soccer fans, I’m honored to welcome Hector Herrera to the Houston Dynamo Football Club,” Segal said in a news release. “General Manager Pat Onstad and I have focused on identifying a difference-maker for our club and Hector’s talents make him a perfect fit. Through this signing process, I was heartened to hear Hector’s commitment to our club and the city of Houston, and I look forward to him becoming part of our community very soon.”

“The addition of a player like Hector validates the new direction and ambitions of our club. He is the type of player who will raise our standards across the board,” Dynamo head coach Paulo Nagamura said.

The 31-year-old will provide experience to a young Houston team and will be able to add a new dimension to their play. He will see out the current season with Atletico Madrid before making the switch to MLS in the summer.
